Selling Chaos fleet
« on: October 22, 2013, 09:53:26 PM »
I posted this in the trade section a while back and the only response was from someone who wanted me to break it up. I'll post a link here in case some BFG fans don't frequent that area.

Chaos Fleet

I have started a selling history here.

Not price gouging? I would ask probably $150ish for that if I was selling it. Have you tried evil bay? Its probably your best bet to find a buyer though it may take a while unless your willing to part with it on the cheap.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

$150 for all that? Did I mention that the fleet would come in a GW carrying case that itself costs almost $60 new? In addition, the battleship alone is probably worth $50-$75. No, I'm not a gouger, but I don't want to get robbed either.

Does anyone else concur with $150 being a fair price, or have an alternate figure? (at least someone finally spoke up)

it was in the correct area for trading/selling it, but a lot of people burned their fingers with the influx of trade on Ebay after SG shutdown.

Your question for what people would consider a fair prize is OK in here. Personally I dont BFG, only BGF, so no help from me

The fact that the whole fleet is already painted basically halves the value of every model. I've never seen anithing that wasn't painted "'eavy metal standard" ,at least, sold at more than its unpainted value.
I know that now collectors could value the model some more but...meh. I'd only pay a premium for an unpainted, unassembled model.
For a personal calculation i'd say that you should sum the cost of every ship and then make it 70%, comprised the case. That if you want to sell the lot. otherwise, if you are looking for a "fair" and slower sell, make it 100% of the ships value still with the case as a bonus. You don't want to sell it? make it 100% and charge 50$ for the case ;)

I rather paint models I buy so I am in the process of stripping paint off some ships I bought earlier. There are people wanting painted ships out their. Also shipping charges would be a factor, which would increase buyers out of pocket. Your best bet is to list on ebay starting at awhat yuan want for them. so if it sells you got what you wanted and anything else you make  is gravy.

good luck, some one has to pull ships out of mothball and back on the line.

I guess I should keep in mind that I'm not dealing with 16 year old kids who don't care, and will happily play with somebody else's paint job, or even bare metal, just to roll a bunch of dice. It isn't 40K I'm selling so the customer base is a little more discerning and particular. I know I had some pretty strict standards when I was still focused on GW products for my hobby time. Now I'm all about strategy board games, and my painting time is focused on those games that include minis as the pieces.

Do you have a boardgamegeek profile so we could check out your collection?

I'm Ubercat there as well. You wont see any GW stuff in my list. R/L made me stop painting for a couple of years 12 years ago and when I had time for hobbies again I'd moved over to boardgames.

I didn't start painting again until I discovered War of the Ring cheap in a going out of business sale. My set is about 85% painted now after about 7 years. I have Runewars as well and it's almost 50% painted. I'm a slow, thorough painter. The next game I paint minis for will get the dip method. I've experimented successfully with dips but I'm not going to switch and use it for mini sets I've already started.

Its hard to say, exactly.  I'm in the process of putting together a Chaos fleet myself, so I have somewhat of a handle on what things are going for, but I'm going to paint it myself so I'm more interested in bare metal and NIB (or at least unassembled) plastics.

I agree that in the the Battleship and Grand Cruiser could go for $50-70 on evilbay.  Admittedly the NIB ones go quicker, but I've seen a number of well painted battleships go for over $50.  Prices on the big metal models seem less effected by painting, either positivly or negativly.  Unassembled cruisers are definitely at a premium, but the assembled and painted ones seem to be going for $10-12 each.  The escorts I would probably place a value of around $6-7 each.  I think all together I would price your fleet at around $200-250 to the right buyer(s).

I think your best profit would be made breaking the fleet up, though.  You can usually get more selling them off individually (or in smaller lots).  Of course that's a bit more hassle, plus additional eBay fees if you go that way.  If it was me, I'd probably sell the Battleship and Grand Cruiser each alone, sell the cruisers singley or in pairs, and the escorts in groups of three for maximum profit.  Just remember, either way ebay can be a crap shoot.  You might get lucky and score big, or you might end up selling the whole thing for a fraction of its actual worth (or not at all if you set too high a reserve or beginning price).

Just a warning that I have picked up Chaos cruisers, assembled and in various states of assembly, with various bits attached or fallen off, painted and unpainted, for a grand total of £2/piece. This is of course the bottom of the price bracket with largely damaged models, but there's no telling where your ships will land. Sometimes there's buyers about and paying attention, sometimes there are. Sometimes there's too many ships for any one lot to become a battleground.
Quite crucial to be able to tell minefields and rally points apart...

Of course on the other end of the spectrum there are people trying to sell Chaos cruisers with broken parts, missing bits or even improperly assembled for $25-30 each.  If you watch eBay for a while, you see that a lot of the higher priced items are not actually selling.  Looking at actual selling prices is the best way to gauge your collection's value.

True!  I've seen things go for a relative song one week, and the same thing sell for 3-4X as much the next week.  As I said, eBay can be a real crap shoot.  ::)
