Replacement bases / stands
« on: September 27, 2012, 11:36:05 AM »
Hello!

I don't know much about BFG.  I bought the main rulebook a while back and I'd been looking for Eldar, since that's what I collect pointy ears for WHFB, Warmaster and Epic, and I love the ship models.

I've found a bunch on ebay that are ending soon but they have no bases.  GW sell little flying bases:

But the stems look tiny!

I don't want to faff and make magnetic things or use bases from another system, I'd like something as close as possible to the originals.

Any suggestions?

Your looking for the 30mm and 60mm round bases. These are fairly cheap and have and easy to install peg that glues into the ship and snaps on and off of the stem. Plus theyre cheapish :D.

The gw bases and stems should be correct, they break alot tho... Ive got probably 50 broken ones at least...

Wow thats impressive, the fiddly bit always seems to snap off mine :/. Even on the plastic cruisers if one gets toppled accidently they snap right off.

Not to derail too much but my comment is hardly worth a new page. How do you remove the small piece of stem after it snaps off? I'm thinking of using a dremel to get it out but my shaking hands might be my gothic cruisers downfall. How do you guys do it?

I second Talos' question. Sorry bout the damage. Also I have a Shadow cruiser, which is lead that I need to get the tiny peg thing out of, and I do not own a dremel, though I may be able to use one, should I need to.

The Gothic will be an easy testcase as it is plastic. But yes, a dremel or similar will do the trick.
And it isn't a shame if you ask someone with a steady hand to help you out.

What I do nowadays: cut of the small tip of the stem, make hole in ship a litle bigger.
Perfect fit, no magnets, no glue (in most cases) and ships can be taken from the stand.

I use a drill, i have only had problems with escorts... Lol. None of my ships are glued if they snap off i pull the stem out with a needle and tweezers, BB and CG are the only ones i have drilled for a larger stem tho, probably why i have so many snapped off stems lol...

I noticed you can buy aluminium stems on ebay, perhaps this would help the snapping problem?

And are all BFG bases 30mm or 60mm?

Hi Stormwind, any chance of a link to the metal stems? I'm about to build up my fleet and the stems have always worried me.

Ah yes, those are the very ones!  The problem is though, I don't know how tall / wide bases are meant to be, so wouldn't know which ones to get.

Those metal stems are nice, i however am cheap :P. The stem size is strictly what you perfer for looks. Base size is 30mm for anything with less than 12 hull or 3 shields, anything with 12+ hull or 3+ shields must be on a 60mm.
