[WM] Dwarves WIP pics
« on: July 22, 2009, 03:03:21 AM »
Hey All,
I have collected a bunch of WM pictures with the good intention of sharing them on these forums as batreps and such. Like many good intentions, they've soured a bit, as I have a ton of battle pictures and no time to write a proper batrep...   :-[
so, in order to nibble away at the backlog, I've decided to show off my relatively new dwarf army. Then the 3 batreps won't seem like such a big task...
So, on to the bearded ones:
I decided on a checked color scheme of deep red and mustard-yellow. I wanted them relatively colorful, but not as garish as the Empire can be. So I started with a black undercoat, followed by the red and yellow:

Then came the skin, and of course, the beards. Since the beards are so prominent, I decided to vary the colors. Looking at an entire unit of brown beards would've nibbled away at the sanity of my OCD side  :P

Next I did the metal parts and flags:

Then further detail such as gloves:

And finally, basing and painting the bases. An example of some warriors before flocking and sealing. I decided to also apply a black wash to their beards and faces after this pic was taken:

The infantry and artillery at the same level of completion:

The flame cannons are converted skaven warp cannons (or whatever they're called). Seemed to me some sort of metal would work better for fire-related weaponry, so I made them brass-colored (converted still-style - appropriate for beer-swilling dwarves, yes?) You may recognize the heroes from the BoFA box set.
Slayers before the wash and basing/flocking:

I will get around to the finished product-pictures soon. Enjoy!

Great pics.
I love the dwarf models.
They are amongst the best ones released by GW for the game.

Should I be making a trained chimp comment here? :P

Seriously though, having seen these in the flesh/metal they make for a very impressive army. It was also pretty ridiculous how fast he got them painted too. As to those Flame Cannons, they turned a Boar Boy charge into a Pulled Pork BBQ in just a single turn. Not fun at all.

It is missing Gyrocopters though...

Here are the pictures of my finished dwarves:
First up, the Warriors and artillery:

Thunderers and Rangers:

Slayers:

And finally, my proxies for gynocopters, "Griffon dragoons":

The idea of a working helicopter in a fantasy realm  ::) with plenty of cool flying creatures is just very annoying to me, so to get around it (i.e spending $$ on models I hate) I stuck a few thunderers on a stand with some warhammer plastic building decorations. The effect of a bunch of these guys landing near the enemy, blazing away, and taking off again seems pretty close to that of the gyrocopter with its gatling gun (did I already use the  ::) ? Oh yeah, I did). Fluff-wise, I justify the dwarves having griffons by reasoning they must've taken them in trade for some cannon; Of course, this particular dwarf king got a little fleeced, as the griffons in question were clearly skittish juveniles and not very good for close combat...
(I realize this is all fantasy and objectively rather absurd, but gyrocopters and birdmen in particular just make me say "oh, come ON...")
but enough of the unsolicited commentary... Enjoy!

Nice work.  Personally I have always liked the gyrocopters, even though they are a bit out there.  But your Griffon Dragoons are a really cool idea and add character to your army.

I like the girffon idea! customize armies is part of the hobby, and it is always a pleasure seen good unexpected units.
