[WM] new terrain piece
« on: April 18, 2012, 09:11:02 AM »
I've always liked the idea of the scale of a terrain piece really dwarfing the warmaster figures. For a while now i've wanted to make some huge cliff faces that block movement on one side of the table.

I haven't got the time (or the talent  ;D ) to make them myself, so I commissioned a guy to make me some for me.

He's finished them today, so i'd thought i'd share the images. It may give inspiration to others.

I think he's done a great job. My brief was to have seperate pieces so i have the option to put the 2 end pieces on the edge of the table, and have a flanking army appear between the mountains (image 8 ) Those two end pieces will fit with that same gap on the 4ft table edge

He didn't have 10mm figures, but he's put those 28mm LotR figures on to give a sense of scale

He added the cave as an extra, just to add something different, and i like it.

For the cave i was thinking of possible scenarios such as.........
- a captured girl is going to be sacrificed to some creature, a rescue mission
- i could put a dragon or a hydra in the cave entrance. The mission is to kill the creature and destroy all it's eggs before they hatch
- empire/dwarf cannons will be able to sit on various flat areas, maybe that cave is a side entrance to a dwarven kingdom

For the wall itself i'm going to use the 2 end pieces on the side of the table, as a gap between some mountains. I'd like to get a 10mm castle and use the cliff walls as the back, so the castle is embedded into the rock face. It would also be good to have some sort of fortification in between the 2 end pieces, blocking the path

My word, they're gorgeous! Do you have a gaming table to match?

Yes the back is straight and black

@pw.... my gaming table is 4 boards (each 2ft by 4ft) so we can have an 8ft by 4ft table.
I covered it with that GW battlematt. We prefer to have a flat table and add hills on top

This is my table, .... a WotR game i had a while back

Lovely!

Big pieces like these make for epic games and allow for scenario writing that fires the imagination!

Stunties defend the gap against the Chaos Horde. 300!

That's some really nice cliff faces- and the join/split is really well done. Do you know what it's made out of? I imagine a lot of styrofoam, but is the rock texture anything other than foam carving?

Thanks David,
Yes something like the 300 film would be a great scenario  ;D

He kept me updated with the progress. He was going to styrofoam, but didn't feel it looked realistic enough. He decided to sculpt a large section of cliff face out of concrete. Then when the concrete sculpture is complete he made a silicon mould of the rock face and used it to cast individual rocky pieces which can then be broken up and used throughout the entire rock face from this one sculpture.
(not sure what he put in the casting moulds though?)

Not sure yet, he's posting them today or tmrw.

I think they are going to be heavy though, it's okay if they are because i'll use them for WM games at my house. Even transporting them to WHworld might be okay, it's not too much hassle putting them in my car.

They all arrived on monday. Heaviest one is 13lbs (or 5.9KG in new money)

Not that bad

Got a multiplayer game on sunday using the mountains in a scenario  ;D
