BFG 1.5 - BFG LRB / ordnance issues
« on: July 01, 2009, 09:49:02 PM »
Hi all.

After going through the BFG 1.5 document (http://www.scribd.com/doc/11739418/-Battlefleet-Gothic-FAQ-2007) I'm just simply confused about a few things related to ordnance, and spending a few hours googling over a cavalcade of different gaming forums I feel none the wiser. So, any opinions on the following points would be appreciated:

1. Fighters supporting bombers: I recall seeing a rule in some incarnation of the BFG rulebook that an attack craft wave which had both fighters and bombers was able to do some nasty tricks when the wave attacked a capital ship (the fighters were suppressing the defending ship's turrets somehow?). The BFG 1.5 makes a reference to this rule ("Fighters can escort a-boats in a wave in the same manner that they can escort bombers, though they offer no bonus to a-boat attacks."), but I can't find the actual rule from the rules available in the GW site nor in the original printed rulebook. What's this all about, and what are the actual current rules for combined fighters+bombers attack craft waves?

2. Sticking with the bombers:  I just recently noticed that when rolling for the amount of hits each bomber squadron does to a capital ship (after defending turrets have had their go), you are supposed to reduce the number of defending turrets from each bomber squadron's dice, and not just once for the whole wave. Doesn't this effectively make bombers which make D3 hits (fighta-bombas for example) pretty useless, as usually a target capital ship has at least 2 turrets? And bombers would bee kinda pointless against larger ships with 4 shields, and a 6-shield cheesey hiveship would be immune to bombers? Have I really understood this correctly?! :P
All this assuming that there is no suppression rules referred in my first question.

3. Then torpedoes and time sequence. Lets assume we have a situation where a torpedo salvo would clip two vessels during it's move. Lets say that half of the salvo hits the first ship in it's path, causing it to explode with one of the higher rolls in the catastrophic damage table. Which is resolved first, the catastrophic damage table explosion or the left over torpedo salvo's remaining movement (and attacks to the second ship)? It would kinda make sense fluff-wise that a massive warp- or plasmadrive explosion takes a few moments from impact to fully ignite, and rules-mechanically thinking it would be kinda clearer to resolve an ordnance item's whole move before resolving any other effects. Still, if you want to stick to the "chronological" order of things, the explosion would need to be resolved before the remaining torpedoes can continue their move. The actual rulebook doesn't seem to tackle this question at all. This is not a very important issue, but it has been bugging me in a theoretical level for quite some time. :)

Any comments to these issues would be greatly appreciated.

1. Yes, it is called Fighter Turret Suppression Rules. It was omitted inadvertently. For every fighter included in the bomber wave, you add +1 to the number of attacks you roll up to the number of turrets. So 3 fighters escorting 3 bombers vs a 3 turret ship. This means you roll (D6-3)+(D6-3)+(D6-3)+3 to get the number of attacks.  Against a 2 turret ship using the same wave, you roll (D6-2)+(D6-2)+(D6-2)+2 with one fighter being wasted.

2. Orks Fighta=Bommas have a special rule where they roll D3-(turrets-3) where (turrets-3) cannot go below 0. And yes, bombers would be pointless against ships with 6 turrets without the fighter turret suppression rules.

3. Explosion would resolve first. When torps attack you resolve everything at that point before moving on to the next ship. If the ship it attacked blows then you resolve the effects on torps first.
