Recent rules issues
« on: May 09, 2009, 03:08:51 AM »
Recently had to deal with a handful of questions, some of which I think may have been addressed already but I've forgotten the answers, and also had two questions regarding interpretation of the changes in the BBB that were in the whole revamping that limited ordnance, changed NCs to scatter weps, and lowered the price of the Styx

1:  May ships conduct teleport/ portal H&R attacks while within asteroid fields?  May they do so if they are in an asteroid field and their enemy not? (and vice versa)

2:  Is a ld test for navigation required to turn a ship in an asteroid field if it remains stationary as Eldar may or a ship in an asteroid field in a gravity well or on BR special orders.

3:  Since vessels may only fire at 10cm or less in asteroid fields, to they gain a positive shift on the gunnery table for battery weapons at close range, or is that presumed to be negated due to the asteroid field?

Next 2 have risen from a thread on Warseer:

1:  Do escorts no longer get to reroll their attempts to navigate asteroid fields?  The rule book states that if they fail their test, 1d6 is distributed across the squadron but does not mention whether the reroll is removed or remains an aspect of the rules.  Are hits distributed as one would weapons fire?  It makes sense because if the player may distribute the hits as he pleases, a 6 strong escort squadron could fail and just take shield impacts as a result...

2:  Related to 1, the "new" rendition of the rule book doesn't state that ships making AAF checks through the asteroid fields must make their ld check on 3d6.  It just seems stupid that a ship moving at high speeds with no ability to maneuver would have a harder time of negotiating the field, but I'd like every one elses takes on it.

I don't see why they cannot conduct TP attacks even if one ship is in an asteroid field or not. Nothing in the TP or Asteroid Rules preclude them from doing so.

2:  Is a ld test for navigation required to turn a ship in an asteroid field if it remains stationary as Eldar may or a ship in an asteroid field in a gravity well or on BR special orders.

I don't see anything which removes the Ld test so take the test as normal. One does have to be careful about asteroids even if just turning in place.

3:  Since vessels may only fire at 10cm or less in asteroid fields, to they gain a positive shift on the gunnery table for battery weapons at close range, or is that presumed to be negated due to the asteroid field?

They should get the positive shift as per the rules as nothing in the Asteroid rules prevents the shift.

The rule has been omitted so no more rerolling. Distribution should be the same as weapons fire,

Probably an inadvertent omission. I would say roll 3D6.

Admiral_d_Artagnan is right on the money.

I'm pretty sure you should still roll 3d6 on the leadership test for a ship on AAF! I don't remember any disscusions to remove it.

**What would you reckon about a house rule where you suffer a number of asteroid hits equal to the difference you failed the leadership test by?

In almost all cases that's a lot weaker than D6, and I think D6 is a reasonable amount of punishment. As Eldar I would love to take fewer hits, of course.

It would lessen asteroid damage some what....

What if you had different densities (or speeds...) of asteroid fields that put a modifier on your leadership? Say a D3 modifier that you roll at the start of each game for each asteroid field.

Excuse me, guys - I mean no disrespect, just want to clarify things for myself.

Could you explain why exactly you think that escort reroll of Ld test for asteroids is omitted deliberately while 3d6 for AAF is omitted by mistake?! I mean, from the way the rule in the updated book looks, the whole paragraph from the old text is just missing. It doesn't even say that you need to take Ld test to navigate asteroids at all! The missing paragraph contained note about escort reroll and about 3d6 for AAF, and there is nothing to suggest that one part of that paragraph is missed deliberately and the other part is missed erroneously.

But maybe you have some more specific info on this? If you do, please share it!
Thanks in advance.

The Admiral had the thought, and at that point it was not necessarily heavily substantiated. Ray's word is law in this game, though, so we should heed him when he says that that's the case.

That is an ugly omission!  :-[ How the heck did that slip by?!

I can only apologise and say you need to pass a conventional leadership test to traverse an asteroid field without taking damage. Escorts do not get a re-roll, instead they may only suffer D6 asteroid hits spread between all the escorts that went through the asteroid field.

Thanks for explanation!

I assume D6 hits suffered by escort ships that went through asteroid field should be spread evenly?

Allocate the asteroid hits working through the escorts. So if 6 Imperial escorts went through an asteroid field and suffered 5 asteroid hits, 2 escorts would be destroyed and one would have lost it's shield until it moves away from the BM caused.

If the hits were spread evenly a squadron of 6 Imperial escorts could never be hurt by asteroids, only slowed down!

Also for purposes of BM placement: place the BM's completely inside the asteroid field and touching the first point of movement through the atsteroid field that movement.

It's clear now, thank you very much!
