Dwarves versus Beastmen a Battle Report
« on: June 24, 2010, 09:04:04 PM »
As promised here is my latest BR.
We were playing 2000 points.
My list consisted of:
1 beastlord
1 wargor
2 bray shamen one with a ring of magic
4 beastherd
4 herdkin
2 minotaurs
4 centigors
2 chaos hounds
4 tuskgor chariots
1 Dragon Ogre Shaggoth.

The dwarves consisted of
1 General
2 Runesmiths one with staff of spellbinding
9 warriors
2 rangers
2 slayers
2 cannons
1 gyrocopter.

Bathing in sunshine

I kept 2 units of beastherd and 2 units of herdkin in reserve for ambushes.

The herdstone in the middle of the table conferred +1 to spell casting but also +1 to dispells if the runsmith/shaman was actually on the stone's base.

Turn one:
Beastmen get the initiative and go first.
Left flank got 2 successful commands in to threaten the stunties.

Shaggoth, centigors and herdkin moved 20 cms up the centre and the bray shaman moved the right flank 2 a total of 40cms.

A devastating first round of commands with my line being fairly well apread and ready for the next turn.

Dwarves then moved 4 units of warriors forward on the right flank, as usual my mate had illegally brigaded his slayers so after a quick rejig they moved forward and the general then issued a failed command to the gyrocopter.

Turn two:
Beastmen managed to move the right flank one command.
Capturing the herdstone.

The left flank moved closer towards the dwarves.

The shaggoth remained stood in the middle.

Managed to cast 1 out of 2 spells which was then dispelled.
Centigors got off 3 shots at the at the warriors and missed all 3.

The dwarves moved their left flank forward with slayers ready for the next charge.
Gyrocopter moved to attack minotaurs in centre and centre flank moved rangers and cannons to within range, but also within charge range.

Overall view.

The rangers, gyrocopter and cannons opened fire.
This did 3 wounds, the drunk gyrocopter pilot shot at the herdkin and including the cannons wiped out a unit of herdkin. The minotaurs come out of the engagement unscathed.

Turn three:
On initiative chariots and chaos hounds charge the slayers on the left flank, hounds in centre charge the flank of the gyrocopter, and the minotaurs charge the rangers taking one wound.

Centigors got set up on the right flank to enable maximum shots.

Shaggoth actually obeyed two orders to catch up with the rest of the army.

The chariots hid behind the chaos hounds on the advice of my esteemed opponent.

Chariots charged cannons and took 2 wounds, the centigors and beastherd hid behinf the hill.

The hounds and chariots destroyed the slayers then advanced into the warriors behind and destroyed a stand. The warriors returned 6 hits onto the chariots and did 2 wounds.
Dwarves repelled the assault when support was added.

Hounds wiped out the gyrocopter.
Chariots destroyed the centre losing 2 stands in return.

Centigor shooting amounted to nothing.

The dwarves initiative charged the chariots in the centre and the rangers charge the remaining stand of chariots, the warriors initiative charged the dogs, slayers charged the chariots and were destroyed, the chariots lost 1 stand and charged into warriors to support the hounds.
The warriors won the combat, but could not capitalise on it as they could not pursue.

Rangers attacked the chariots and lost by one and the chariots pursued and failed to hit them.
The rangers also failed to hit so a redeploy.

On the left hand flank the warriors destroyed the chaos hounds, and did 1 wound on the chariots.
Out of the 12 return hits, did 2 wounds and the chariots were driven off.

On the right hand flank 2 units of warriors attacked the centigors doing 4 wounds.
The dwarves pushed them back 1 cm, pursued doing a further 5 wounds and destroying another stand, herdkin behind move out of the way.

Dwarves did 2 wounds and destroyed remainding centigors with the centigors failing to return any wounds.
The dwarves, as is their nature, RUN AWAY!
sorry retreat ;)

Turn four:
Almost the entire army charges on initiative, followed by a brigade of herdkin and beastherd being ordered into to ambush the dwarves rear on the right flank.

The left flank chariots completely destroyed the remaining dwarves.
Dwarves managed to destroy a stand of chariots in return.

In the centre the shaggoth ran rampage destroying everything it came into contact with.

When backed up by the minotaurs, the dwarves days were numbered.

They did manage to get it seriously wounded but not before he killed the unit with the attached General :)

Is this the end?

All in all a good game.
Beastmen are a good army to play and as long as the big hitters get in you are on a roll.
But the eureka models are a bit delicate so beware!

Cheers
Mick

Hi Azrael!

Thanks for such a detailed report! It's a great thing to see two beautifully painted armies arrayed into battle. It's also good to see one of your inspiring armies in action.

It seems to me that Dwarves didn't use the terrain to their advantage and even stubborn warriors have to die eventually when charged by chariots in the open. The Shaggoth on rampage was a sight on its own!

I am just wondering if the relatively narrow battlefield limited tactical options? It seems that there were no other opportunity but to charge straight into enemy without fancy flank attacks.

Great and bloody battle, once again thanks for sharing, especially with all these pictures!

Cheers! :)

Thanks to you both.
Both armies are mine as my mate is still building his forces up.
As for the narrow table.
You are correct, but you have to make the best of what you have available ;)
We do have a larger table but the wife only let's me play board games on it :)

Just finished a 2k game O&G versus Mortal Chaos.
Chaos got well and truly smashed :)

Go Greenskins! Any chances for some highlights from this battle too?

I am not really complaining about narrow table. I actually found it funny that when playing on the 6' x 4' table the units tend to occupy only half of it anyway. :)
