Title: Tale of Warmaster Painters [December]
Post by: pw on December 01, 2009, 10:10:36 PM
So the last month of the tale begins and it looks like we're a dwindling bunch!

I think I've just about painted enough units to coast my way into the last weeks without shame but I'd really like to get more done before the end (and maybe continue in the new year). At the moment I'm working on a unit of flagellants which are my favourite sculpts I've painted so far. They may be giants compared to the halberdiers but they are really well done. To make things tricky I'm working on a commission for a Blood Bowl team and I'm about to move house so my painting time is virtually non-existent. Oh, and I'm struggling with a need to buy myself a Parliamentarian army from Warlord Games to use with Warhammer Historical's English Civil War. Hopefully I'll manage to complete another three or four units before I succumb!

@jchaos - good to see you're still with us with more nice skellies. Keep them coming, I'm finding the company really helpful and inspiring.

'onnest Guvner, I'm still a'tit

Actualy the painting tray is setting next to me, begging to be picked up, but Real Life(TM) is throwing up to much interference, and will continue to do so for at least one more month or so. I did however set myself a serious deadline, the Tribe of the Red Hand WILL make it debut on the tables of the upcomming EuroGT in Austria !!!

I've got Mechrite Red on the back of my hand and on my palette. When I play Space Hulk tomorrow at least some of the Terminators will have red on them that isn't the colour of the plastic they are made of... I'll post some pics elsewhere when I've got some worth showing...

In other news the club seems to be going well and has plenty of interest. I'm considering picking up some more boards tomorrow, as the four we have isn't quite enough...

BTW, are we planning on starting a new tale in the New Year? If so, I'm going to try finishing off a couple of my WM Empire units in January for the Winter Warmer, and will then go back to my EIR's in February. But then I've said that at least three or four times already...

Right, back to painting, I'll stop at midnight I guess. Better than last night when I didn't get to bed until 3am taking tests, and other not too fun things...

End of December i will probably manage to paint some more of my orks finalluy (so far managed meager 1 unit of boar boyz and one stand of pendraken ork infantry, but with green skin army painter things will go much quicker now... only thing that stops me is wh40k tournament at 20th, for which i have to paint some boyz and two battlewagonz still).

Yep, I have never be out "in mind", but PhD and lab work is taking me all my time. Anyway if the Tale continues in january, I will be in to finish my skellies. I think I had manage to do the half of the proposed list so I am "half happy"  ;)

Greetings all,

I'd like to join in the Tale of Painters, either this month or next.  What do I need to do to sign up?  I've read the guidelines.

I plan to work on a Demon Army, but I have not yet put together an army list, or even a list of unit to convert and paint.

Thanks, and sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

Ed

Hi Ed. I say start now, we need some fresh blood! I'm hoping that there will be a fresh start in the new year but why not get going now, share some lists, pictures and tips to keep us all motivated.

Jchaos79, those undead are awesome!  I like that you used Death as the general, and have the four horsemen of the Apocolypse.  The funerary swarm is great!  Did you create the scarabs yourself or did you get them from somewhere?  I also like the honor guard -- they look a lot like the Tomb Kings skeletons.  How did you do those?

Congrats to those who have continued to post completed units, PW, Jchaos79, Stomm, and the amazingly prolific Azreal71, who seems to have finished up his massive ork horde with time to spare.  My progress has come to a halt due to end the of the season construction push, but now I have spare time and will be back into painting the Ostland army.  I'm working on a unit of knights at the moment.

Now that I have time, I am still planning to get my proposed army finished up by the deadline.

Thanks again to those who have kept at it.

Greetings!

I have finally managed to take some pictures to show that I am still in the tale. It definitely went much slower than I wanted, mostly due to some real life duties taking the priorities. We all know how it goes, but I am back and I will keep painting some more. :) I actually like this idea so much that I hope to contribute further to any new season, which might kick off next year. I still have some miniatures to paint. :)

Anyway, here are my pictures. I start with a unit of archers, which is the last infantry regiment in the 2000 army I am currently painting.

In parallel I also painted a lonely hero on elven steed as I felt like it's time to paint one for this army. So here we go, the first character for Warmaster I have ever painted:

I have just finished a heavy cavalry squadron. Main colours are the same, but I find it very useful to paint feathers in different colours, characteristic for particular regiment. I also try to choose the same miniatures, if there is some variety of them.

And last but not least is another limited range miniature I got lucky to have it. It is Teclis, released some time ago. Initially I planed to have him alone, as I did it with hero on steed, but then I spotted these swordmasters. I really like it the way it turned out, great mage casting spell and protected by the best warriors of the elven kind. :)

I hope you like them too. :)

Cheers! :)

I like the blue and gold theme.

Swordmaster, great, and if I find the Teclis model I've got somewhere I might have a stab at painting him. Actually I should probably have a go at something I might actually use first.... Incidentally High Elves were my first Warmaster army, simply because I couldn't wait for the Empire army to be released. I got as far as painting half a strip, IoW two Archers...

Oh and my only criticism is that I think that little diorama would look best on a circular stand. A big washer or something would work I guess, or a 2p piece to keep it a bit more compact...

Thanks for your comments Black Ed. There is a threat open in warmaster discussion about the funerary swarm http://www.sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=866.0 where it explain which models I use (they are from reaper miniatures).

The honour guard is from pendraken, the egypthian mythical range.

looking forward to see  your miniatures Black ed.

Swordmaster, it is great to see a great number of units painted. And very pretty all of them. I particulary like Teclis, I think is from storm of chaos blister.... am I right? good work

Gretings!

Thanks for nice comments! :)

Yes, Teclis comes from Storm of Chaos blister. I simply got it as a gift, as the blister was divided between various players anyway.

I was indeed looking for round base for Teclis but couldn't find anything suitable and then got unpatient a little. Teclis himself, however, stands on a top of two coins. :)

Cheers! :)

Fantastic stuff Swordmaster. The mini-Teclis looks particularly nice.

Im afraid my painting is officially on-hold for now. With a house move in the next two weeks I've packed my painting toys away. Should be in the new house by Christmas with its dedicated gaming room so hopefully things will pick up again in the new year. For now I'll just have to watch with envy as the rest of you soldier on. Keep up the good work  :) .

Ah the house move, it is familiar to me, as is the promise of a 'gaming room'. I've only in the last year really been able to even put a decent desk and shelves in my 'games room', and then of course found out that with said shelves (still aren't enough), fouton so that it can double up as a spare bedroom and desk, there isn't really any room for an actual games table... So, rather than wait the 5-10 years until I can afford to build 'the mother of all sheds' in the back garden so that I can get some games in, I've actively looked for a games club venue, and lo it has worked....

I also suspect that you'll be putting up shelves until at least Easter, never mind repainting walls, calling out a decorator when you realise that hanging expensive wallpaper yourself is actually a really, really bad idea and so on...

That games room had better come true! I'm sure you're right about the decorating though, I'll probably have the room and no time to go into it...

Great to see some new blood in the tale.
The proposed lists are very interesing, especially the cthulhu based one.
My other obsession after WM is Arkham Horror the board games so I am looking forward to seeing the results.
I will be making a new pledge in January for my next set of models but at the minute spending all my time and money on board games (and bigger tables to play them on).

When I did my mortal chaos army I decided I need an alt for my hero on chaos dragon(before I got into Cthulhu), so I did this.

Only later did someone point out the similarity.
Did the sleeper influence my hand ;)

great Azrael!, this kind of creature is like "the thing that should not be"
Is not death dead which eternal lie, stranger eons even death may die  :P :P

I have a really cool vermin/maggot-model in the mood of Chtulhu horror, that I will like to use to my Chaos army or to "Fomori" list (one not finish but being created by me) to represent Crom-Cuach.

I should paint it. I am glad to see forbiding monstruosities, and eager to see more!!

That looks pretty cool Azrael!  It got me thinking about doing another demon that is just a huge hand reaching through a portal.  The Reacher from Beyond

I've been mulling over the idea of rats or bats for swarms.  I like the idea of making worm swarms though.  I'm just not sure that I can portray worms devouring people in 10 mm.  So maybe it will be rats devouring people.

For demon hordes, I am thinking about taking chaos marauders and replacing the head with a single tentacle.  I will have to try the conversion to see if I like it.

Thanks for being supportive guys.  I was concerned that the Cthulu theme for Warmaster might not be well received.

Steve Jackson Ogre/Cthulu 6mms might not be at all bad for Demon Swarms.

The figs are somewhat large for Epic -- probably Ogryn-sized.   Which means they are slightly small and reedy for WM: probably taller than GW WM dwarves, but a good deal thinner.

Greetings!

It's time for the last update before Christmas. I managed to finish the last regiment of Silver Helms and one more mage. Here we go:

1. Silver Helms

2. Mage

As you see still the same, boring :) style. I decided to take a quick photo of all the units I have painted so far, so here is some kind of a bonus photo:

I really like the fact I have much more painted units now. I still have 2 units of reavers, to units of eagles and a hero on dragon to paint in my 2000 army. As soon as I have them painted I will take a nicer photo of the enitre army.

Merry Christmas to everybody! :)

Nice job on the High Elves Swordmaster.  Good to see you are making progress.

And on the topic of progress, even if it's progress on a glacial pace, I managed a couple of units for the Empire Ostland army.  Better late than never.  Looks like I won't make my 2000 points for December but will keep painting in any case.   Added to the army so far are a unit of knights and a Hellblaster unit.  Or is it two units?  From the Empire roster it lists the Hellblaster unit size as 1.  The blister comes with 2 so did I paint up two units?  If so, bonus for me.

Hellblaster
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w95/M4jumbo/General/Warmaster%20SGPL/SPLWk0801.jpg)

Reiksguard Knights
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w95/M4jumbo/General/Warmaster%20SGPL/SPLWk0804.jpg)

I went with Reiksguard rather than knights in Ostland colors because the Reiksguard are stationed all over the Empire and some alternate colors in the army will look nice and make the knights stand out.  Plus the red and white will still compliment the black, white, and red of Ostland.  In addition to a unit of Knights of the White Wolf, I think I will do two units of Reiksguard and one unit of Knights of the Silver Mts (from the Riders of the Dead book) for the 3 "standard" Knight units in this 2000 points.

Hi m4jumbo!

Your Empire minis looks awesome. Especially because of the Ostland paint scheme. In my opinion using the right basic colours for the whole army is the key for a good looking army. I got about 1.5k of Empire blisters and I think of painting them the same Ostland style thanks to your inspiration. Another option would be Talabheim red and white but I think I will go for the other. Also because I like the Ostland background better. But before I can start painting the Empire I want to finish my Undead army. I will post some pictures of the already finished Infantry below.

I ve been reading this thread for several weeks now and I am enjoying it. But now its time to contribute to it myself and share my progress with you.
At the moment I am painting an Undead army. I chose some brownish red as the main colour in case the main colour isnt bone. I already finished five units of spearmen and four Archers. There are another three spearmen in blisters left to paint because I would like to go for an army heavy on cheap infantry. But right now the cavalry is more important so I can get at least 1000p for some small demo games. There are three units of chariots on my workbench. They will need some more time to finish because normally I paint several units at a time. This mass production saves me some time but also gets boring sometimes. Think of basing five units of spearmen.... Next will be six units of cavalry but I think I will only do three at a time and then go for some carrions, monsters, war machines and of course characters. Hopefully these will be quicker to paint then the infantry and cavalry. So this keeps me busy for the next months. Then I also got a complete empire and chaos army to paint and I have to upgrade my high elves because I am not happy with the first painted minis anymore. So better to say I am busy for the next years....

@ azrael71

Thank you! I enjoy following your thread and the lot of posts. Too bad there are so few enthusiastic posters like you.

@ double click here, thanks for the comments on the Ostland paint scheme.  I'm happy with the way the army is turning out and appreciate the positive comments here.  Wish I could turn out units faster but things keep getting in the way of painting progress.

Your Undead units look good, looking forward to seeing more.  I've got a similar paint scheme on my Undead army.  I'll have to post some pics of the army at some point.

I am curious to see some of your undead models. Maybe they inspire me as much as your empire troops. So it would be nice if you could post some pics when you got some time...
