Title: [WM] furtive warmastering
Post by: Apocolocyntosis on May 01, 2018, 09:31:24 PM
been very slowly starting a small high elf force. Not that i play warmaster, nono, no new scales for me, er …

The distressing thing is how few points that is. Seems WM is a game with a surprisingly high mini count

probably reavers next, while i track down some helms, although i'm not really looking forward to doing horses

Hey, you did well  if it's the first time you paint Wm stuff. This army is really nice ! Do you have adversaries ?

It is a small point count, but your characters will range from 350 to 530 without upgrades in a 2k. Lots of points for 3-5 stands/models.

Great painting.

Excellent painting. I wouldn't worry too much about points- Elves will eat them up in no time once you start getting into fancier things  :P

thanks chaps.  Yes, first warmaster, but I paint a lot of 6mm. Finding 10mm significantly harder.
(Or at least first since I painted a BOFA Smaug in 2005 … he may become a dragon rider for this force)

I do not have adversaries, only been playing online. So far for warmaster I've picked up about 500pts of dwarf and empire bits and have about 1000pt in high elves now (+my old unloved BOFA box set contents that I never used). Looking to expand elves to 1500 and then ideally start a demon army. Plenty of sculpting and conversion options for nurgle, but doubt ill ever actually get round to them!

The fiddliest Elves to paint I find are the chariots.  You'll find Silver Helms at 110 points a pop will eat up the points quick enough!  Two heroes, two wizards is 340 points just for four stands for HE.  And the General is 180 points even if you don't count the dragon he rides. = P

limping along still … still not at 500pts … Swordmasters and reaver units done. Phoenix guard next next.

Are reavers any use in game? I like the sculpts but compared to units like pistoliers, reavers seem a bit lacking.

Those look great Apoc.

The Reavers keep pace with the Silver Helms and Chariots better, I use them to shoot out support or to get 1cm behind something that's been charged.

Great painting, as always.

Reavers are still more cavalry unit to align. And it's still 6 shots on 12 centimetres. With a high command, they can be placed where they must be. Shooters are always better used with a high command.

slow progress continues, but the phoenix guard are almost ready to join the ranks. Going to start hunting for the second spearman command variant to finish the brigade.

Had some fun with reavers in a couple of games following the suggestions above and they performed well … but possibly only comparatively as any 'knight'-stat units I take in any race at present seem to fail orders non stop  ;D

They are really, really great.

What i like most is the strange colour you used for the base of the sprues. Sort of greenish i would never had chosen myself. But it suits the blue very well.

Beautifully painted Apocolocyntosis. How will you finish the bases?

I really need to finish off my High elves also. Thx for the inspiration.

Keep up the good work
cheers

'Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days' Huh, been a while then …
In the background i've been very making slow progress on painting elf cav, and faster progress on buying up lots of WM.
My phone's also become useless for taking mini photos for reasons I can't work out, but i've just tried with an old bridge camera so here's to the start of more WM painting over Christmas!

I've painted 2 units of dragon princes which im not that keen on, and now working on 2 units of silver helms to finish a heavy cav brigade, hopefully done in the next couple of days:

Also got some demons to play with … in the unlikely event anyone has some seekers, screams or khorne hounds available let me know! Test plaguebearer

I've seen a lot of your stuff before, but it's still great to see some lovely elves completed.

I'll use this as inspiration to make efforts to paint something to some day give you a fight now that I've finally picked up a brush again!

Keep posting the inspiration! Army shots soon, right? :D

cheers doom, hopefully army pic jan/feb when i aim to have a basing marathon. Putting off basing now as im no longer able to attend the bonescon tournament.

Silver helms done-ish. Not done gems properly, lazy and cant find fiery orange. I gonna say ill come back and do the gems properly later, but i know i wont. (although looking at the image, helmet gems alone would make a huge difference in quality)

Planning to have a break from painting and try my first WM conversions on thursday.

Mmm... Surprised to say i don't like them.

The spears are too 40K Eldarish. Looks like classical spears of the futur with the white shaft, red decorations and blue stuff.

Sorry :(

No problem Marell, I appreciate the comments. Ive got to warmaster from epic, so the eldar link is warranted. I'm looking forward to finishing and moving on from high elves – it's not my normal paint style and i'm fed up with it!

Meanwhile i've been distracted from high elves by starting my new year project:

But i need to get back to elves and finish them off. want to do 2 chariot units, 1 spears, 1 bolt thrower, 2 eagles, and heroes minimum still.

Oh bloody hell that knight's inspiringly gorgeous.  I thought I had a plan of what to finally paint now that I've started, and that thing makes my Warmaster tests want to jump the queue.

Tutorial? Or will you just paint my army? :D

Oh, yes, nice beard !!

And the helmet is well made too. Congrats !

What will you use it for ? Just a champ in the unit ? A character ?

he's just the unit musician, but the bare head is for the unit champion – Voland, for Voland's Venators.

thank you both

still working away slowly, well over a year since i started, i've now done my second spearman unit, giving a full melee brigade

2nd bolt thrower and 2 chariot units next

Next up bolt thrower no2, (then maybe teclis?), then some conversion for chariots no2, then eagles perhaps

i am now getting the feeling my first WM army may actually get finished

'Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.'  huh, sooo, anyway, I have finally got this going again. Army is almost complete. 3 stands of units left to base and 2 characters to paint, hopefully will have an army shot in the not too distant future. Might even get my first real over the table game in a couple of months.

annnnd army done

only 4 units of silver helms, which i realise isn't meta-perfect list composition wise, but plan would be if i paint dogs of war knights etc, to use those with the high elves as a second helms brigade

army has:
teclis, tyrion, lord on eagle, lord on dragon
4 units spearmen, including 1 swordmaster, 1 phoenix guard
4 units silver helms, including 2 dragon princes
3 units archers (silly number to have)
2 units bolt thrower
2 units eagles, including 1 converted phoenix unit
2 units reaver, including 1 BoFA elf cavalry as reavers with lances
2 units chariots, including 1 converted white lion chariot unit

? now i just need to paint a second army to fight them (although a friend is painting some dwarfs to do battle against).

Doing well, getting to gaming with some good groups now.  My hand is recovered further, the therapy is working (but sucks). I have finally started painting my Warmaster, though nothing like these beauties of yours, but I'm staring at only 99% shamefully unpainted armies! Progress!

What's next in your great project log?

Got a bit distracted making half scale BFG. Next WM will be nurgle, as a combined chaos + daemons nurgle based force. Plan is maybe 1000pt chaos, 15000pt daemons, done in such a way i can combine to proxy for 2000pt of either (e.g., daemon flyers will proxy as harpies). I;ve got maybe half the minis in place, not not worked out a quick paint scheme, mostly nurgle, so looking for a quick and dirty way to paint loads at once.

I'm now self-isolating (I'm diabetic) and "working" (haha) from home, so if my paints haven't all dried up I might actually be able to break the 2 year gap in painting stuff. Every cloud has a silver lining?  :D

Oh, you're the guy I'm super jealous of over on Facebook. Good to know.  ;)

Seriously, though, absolutely amazing stuff, especially with the conversions (also, good idea for adding cloaks to the White Lion Chariot drivers; knew I was forgetting something for my own conversions).

Something I'd asked your friend who was posting your pictures, and can now ask you, is where did you get those absolutely stunning waystones for the phoenix bases? I have a high elf army myself, and would love to use those as scatter terrain, if you wouldn't mind sharing where you found them.

Again, though, absolutely amazing work. Well done.

Hi Aniodia, the waystones are 3d printed, a little piece i did to test some cad software. I can send you the .stl file if you would like.
