Title: My new and humble LOTR-Warmaster blog
Post by: Mars Miniatures on January 03, 2015, 11:11:50 PM
Hi there,

Im Mar, and I just started 10mm with Copplestone, some GW Warmaster, some Pendraken, and just ebayed a BOFA box set (new and still wrapped in plastic!)  So Ive started documenting my "adventures in 10mm".  I am very happy to have found this place, lots for me to read and catch up on.  Im also thankful to have found Copplestone minis whose sculpts drove me to take the plunge back into warmaster.

Heres some pics from my blog...     http://mars-miniatures.blogspot.com/

Stormwind,
Thank you kindly, Ive been a longtime miniaturist of many scales and genres, but 10mm Middle Earth-ish is my new and most favorite phase/craze.

Welcome Mars,

Great pictures out there!

(there is a tip if you are interested in to resieze the pictures using the flag width in this way:

[IMG width=750] ..... [/  IMG]  warning width is sensible to capital letters and spaces

Returning to your images, I really like the golden painting scheme of the dwarves.

I take a look to your blog and I have a question... what is a mindflyer? great sculpt and nice paint

jchaos79,

Thank you so much for that resizing tip, I was looking and trying all kinds of html to do it.

A mindflayer is a Dungeons and Dragons monster.  Its also a scary foe in the video game "Dark Souls".  They paralyse you then, suck your brains out with their tentacles.  Obviously, I love them... alot.

Besides using my 10mm for LOTR Warmaster, I am also painting and sculpting 10mm minis for use with a hybrid of 1) AD&D Birthright RPG campaign with 2) A Mass Battle miniatures ruleset either Warmaster itself, Mayhem by Brent Spivey, or Black Powder/Hail Caesar.

I'm about to buy some Total Battle buildings myself but have to compromise with their smaller 10mm range at the moment.

6mm does look good, great in fact, but I really want to try and get some buildings as close to the Forge World ones as possible.

Draccan,
Thanks!

Stormwind,
Yeah, if I had Forgeworld buildings, I would go pure 10mm buildings as well.  But I really like the small footprint that 6mm buildings take up on the table.  With that said, luckily, Total Battle does 6,10,15,28mm buildings so cover alot of bases for everyone.  And it seems they are ramping up to fill in the spots that are missing.  I hope they do 6mm north african (currently they have 10mm) because that looks like it would be good for scenarios in Umbar, or Harad.  And the fortified walls might even do for minas tirith walls. If im brave enough, I might buy them anyway... 10mm north african walls, with 6mm italian buildings for minas tirith.  Just not sure if it would work.  But IF I did, I will be sure to blog about it.

Yes, 6mm does work - the Leven buildings are fab for that and I might try them in the future if I wanted to build a larger village area for a good price:

http://www.levenminiatures.co.uk/medieval.htm

===

It's such a shame that the DG production tower didn't end up becoming a full Warmaster fortress project.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/ratibes/m.html?item=111297257774&hash=item19e9d5612e&pt=Games_US&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

You can still get the tower and a scenic base but they moved on to an Epic kickstarter so we never saw them finish off the walls and interior buildings they had pencilled in.

Stormwind,
Thanks for those links, Leven is new to me.  I will be picking up some of those in the near future.

Dave,
Im in California.  Are you the owner of Warmonger minis?  Ive been eyeing your site for the past month.  Im planning to make a purchase, but had to finish my copplestone/magister militum orders, ebaying some warmaster/bofa, just to get a foundation of stuff.  But your landsknecht are next in line, along with some trial Tridente medievals, and eureka.

I am afraid Tridente is not operative by now. The webpage is working but not response to the emails. Let's hope in the near future the company awakes.

jchaos79,
Noooooo.... they look amazing.  Guess I scratch that from my list, for now at least.  I wanted their mongols to use as Variags of Khand.

Great looking figures, Mar.

It is a shame TB line aren't available - but for this project you might have found their cavarly a bit big compared to copplestone. The new Pendraken Mongols are very nice - if a little small!
Title: Re: My new and humble LOTR-Warmaster blog

forbes,
Thanks kindly.
I thought I read somewhere that TB were a good fit to Copplestone/Warmaster.  I could be wrong about that though, my memory gets its wiring crossed at times.  I do have Pendraken Ottoman and 100 Years war armies, not yet painted, and I do see that they are a a little weedy.  But since I will be using BOFA, I suppose I will try not to be a stickler to size.  If its 10mm I will use them.  Or so I bravely say today...

In my opinion once painted and based the differences are not seen in the battlefield.
Title: Re: My new and humble LOTR-Warmaster blog

I agree very much with the above.

Some of the GW Warmaster figures aren't really in scale with each other - so it's quite hard to pick s starting size.

I have quite a bit of TB line Arab figures, and the infantry scale well with most others. Their cavalry is on the larger size, like GW Empire. This makes them huge compared to Magister Militum cav, and quite big compared to most Pendraken. Pendraken mongols are deliberately small to represent the small horses used - but they are very nice figures.

I just put in my order for 12 pikes and 4 zweihanders.  If you dont mind my asking, whats the next unit you are going to do? My enquiring mind would like to know.

March to Helm's Deep. Leave none alive. To war!

So I just finished 10 more units! This time its Isengard Uruk-Hai orcs, to join forces with my existing Mordor orcs.  Again, these are copplestone minis.

5 regiments of Uruk spears, 3 regiments of Uruk swords, 2 of bows, 2 warg riders units, and 3 command stands
Individually they amount to 150 uruk spears, 90 swords, 48 archers, 24 warg riders, an orc foot general, drummer, champion, orc mounted general, and Saruman himself.

A massive pike block

Whom do you serve?  SAARRUUUMMAAAAAAANNNNN!

In the next day or two, I will take some pics of all my orcs, both Mordor and Isengard combined.  On the painting table is the Riders of Rohan and the "Rohan" Total Battle buildings!  After that, Gondorian infantry, Warmaster high elves to use as Elrond and the forces of Imladris.  Even further out, are 8 units of warmaster dwarves to use as iron hills dwarves.  Then, finally, I will work on painting the Battle of 5 Armies box and its contents...

Oh, Ive also put an order for Warmonger pikes and zweihanders, ebayed a pack of Warmaster Empire heroes.  Maybe they arent Middle-Earthian, but I will use them for normal Warmaster games.

A little taste of my latest blog post. See full post with more pics here: mars-miniatures.blogspot.com

Forth, and fear no darkness! Arise! Arise, Riders of Theoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day… a red day… ere the sun rises!

Hey there folks. Its me again, Mar, your host, with a great post filled with pics of 10mm goodness!

What have I got today? Copplestone 10mm of course! Some "not" Riders of Rohan and some Rohan style buildings from Total Battle Minis. My Rohirrim force consists of 3 units of cavalry, 2 units of light horse archers, and 1 veteran guard unit. For commanders, I have Theoden, Eomer, Grimbold, and Lady Eowyn. Below are not only the pics of the minis and the buildings, but also a faux battle report between Rohan and an invading army of Orcs across the Fords Of Isen.

And now, the faux battle report...  an overview from the Rohan commander.  On the left is Eowyn with her light horse archers.  In the center reserve near the town is the King and his royal guard.  In front of him is Eomer with 2 units of cavalry.  And to the right doughty Grimbold holds the flank with cavalry and some light horse

Rohirrim! TO THE KING!

Preview of the next post:

Next up on the docket, I will take a break from 10mm Middle-Earth, to build up an army for 10mm Dungeons & Dragons! I hope to someday use AD&D 2e Birthright and mesh it with Warmaster for a D&D style mass combat hybrid.

So whats my first 10mm D&D army, you ask?  You remember my little Mindflayer, dont you?  My Magister Militum order arrived and its got alot of minions for him.  Some Quaggoths - bears with spears, axes and rock-throwing units.  Some Githyanki - dagger wielding light infantry with psionic powers.  And some Bullywugs - frogs with crossbows, and some riding on dinosaurs too!  The Illithids are down to get ill in a major incursion on this very blog.  Stay tuned my friends, until next time!

Respect,
Mar

Bookmarked, thanks for link.   I was thinking of these rivers http://www.wargamersterrain.com/products.htm
Now im torn between the two.  Your link looks more dark and crisp rivers, and seem cheaper, havnt done the math yet.  Will investigate further...

If you email the guy he will happily make custom ones for you. You might have to factor in extra postage as he is from over here in the UK.

I asked him to make me a 45 degree river bend section with a ford across and it looks great.

Narx'ylix the Mad, scion of the Illithid Empire, surveyed the battlefield before him.  The mindflayer raised his staff and gave it a slow circle to the left.  Instantly, at his command, 2 regiments of Bullywugs began circling the dwarf village on the left flank.  The Bullywugs were Underdark mutations and not the typical coloration of the overworld variety of the frog-peoples. Their sickly blue hides gave an impression of plagued bruises given form and intelligence.  The mindflayer was pleased to have enthralled them, as they made excellent scouts.  He watched them leaping and skittering around towards the dwarf lines.  At once, within range they stopped and began firing volley after volley of crossbow fire into the defended village.  He hoped the dwarves would be lured out, but no, they would not.  The stubborn dwarves stood resolute behind their shield walls.  So be it, thought Narx'ylix, he looked towards his right and gave a signal for an attack on the right flank.  The ground trembled as regiments of Quaggoths rushed forwards.  The bear-like creatures were ferocious to behold when unleashed. With paw, and spear, and rock, they bounded into the dwarf lines… and smashed into them, driving wedges all across the once clean dwarven battle lines.  With the dwarves in disarray, the mindflayer gave a final command.  Forward the Giths!  The progeny of the Illithid empire's breeding program, the Gith was created to be their most dedicated soldier.  Fast, lithe, deadly, and most importantly trained to use psionic powers, Gith regiments marched forward to sweep away and pursue the last of the dwarven defense.  Another victory for the empire, thought Narx'ylix, but more importantly… more dwarves to enslave to his will!

Greetings, dear readers!  Here is the thrall army of the mindflayer Nax'ylix in pictoral form.   Took awhile to paint, since it comprises 3 smaller armies in composition.  Nearly all figures are from Magister Militum.  Oh and a sneak peak of my "Weathertop" hill, with Battle Of 5 Armies plastic ruins atop it.

jchaos,

Yeah, its for my own world/setting Im creating.  But it wont stop them from invading Middle Earth, once in a while.  Historical wargamers have their "Imagi-Nations" version of alternate history. So I dont mind some Imagi-Dimensions style games, where Conan and Gandalf team up to fight D&D style villains.  At some point I also want to make armies for GRR Martins Game Of Thrones.  I would like to campaign a world war between the 7 Kingdoms of Westeros and the allied forces of Middle Earth.  Thats in the far future, I have a long way to go before Im done painting Middle Earth forces.

By the way you have a very nice style of painting and a high rate of painting!, so I guess westereos armies could not be so far away in time
