Title: (BFG) Tim's Plague fleet blog
Post by: timdp on May 17, 2013, 08:30:07 PM
Have edited this thread to make it my Nurgle fleet blog.

The beginnings, some ships off of ebay with Nurglization added...

Still need to add lots of rust and detail the guns on all the ships.

Terminus Est with additional Nurglization:

And a couple of detail shots...

Plague fleet color test. Just base color and a two color wash so far. A fair amount of dremel work was done to break down and corrupt the clean lines of the ship. Will do more on the next one...

Terminus Est with added icky...

Heretic prototype. Will be doing a slightly longer version for the Pestilaans light cruiser.

Nice. The white nurgle "bits" need some more Nurgle in my opinion. Perhaps the white is to bland to give that effect?
But I like thy green a lot on the ships!

Closeup flash brightened up the white (bone) a lot. Fleet pic gives a better idea of what it looks like in person.

Forgot to take pics of the glowy bits! First real attempt at OSL...

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/timdps/Battlefleet%20Gothic/glowy_zpsd4544206.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/timdps/media/Battlefleet%20Gothic/glowy_zpsd4544206.jpg.html)

A couple underside shots of the cruisers showing drippy parts and more detail:

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/timdps/Battlefleet%20Gothic/side1_zps1e6613d2.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/timdps/media/Battlefleet%20Gothic/side1_zps1e6613d2.jpg.html)

And then on to the alternate Nurgly weapons builds. First off is a pic of the basic builds: IN and Chaos WBs, Chaos LBs and IN lance decks.

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/timdps/Battlefleet%20Gothic/builds_zps3a4c70e6.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/timdps/media/Battlefleet%20Gothic/builds_zps3a4c70e6.jpg.html)

The some Nurgly putty added. Still a ways to go. IN WBs, bottoms of IN lance decks and Chaos and IN launch bays. Not real happy with the launch bays...

Concept works but they need to be a little less doughy.

Glow great! U like the high contrast white scabs on the ships. Keep that as it's pretty unique from most plague fleets.
Launch bays, not so much. I can't help but think of something hexagon shaped, like an insect hive. Perhaps that's because I watched Ninja Scroll last night however.

I too love the glowie.  Maybe you should paint up one of the bays before you discard it as a fail.   A little paint goes a long way and since nurgle ships are very busy it will most likely just blend right in.

Worked a bit today on the glowing engines by adding fluorescent yellow in the centers of each engine to provide a better highlight/contrast for the fluorescent greens. Also added some rust and detailed the gun barrels with a gun blue metallic and more rust.

Old glow

How about some Nurgle ordnance? Fighter craft, bombers, Dreadclaws, etc.

Weird, usually pictures of miniatures look better without flash.

Nice glow. :)

Have fighters and a few bombers, but have not found any Dreadclaws yet. Fighters and bombers are primed and ready to paint, but I want to get a few more ships done before starting on the ordnance.

Weird, usually pictures of miniatures look better without flash.

Direct flash probably brightened up the fluorescents with a strong dose of UV light.

OK, lets try some photos in outdoor natural sunlight....

Glow with natural light (enhanced with white sheet of paper under the models
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/timdps/Battlefleet%20Gothic/fleetglowoutdoors_zps9cf7207b.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/timdps/media/Battlefleet%20Gothic/fleetglowoutdoors_zps9cf7207b.jpg.html)

Glow detail. Not a good place to hang out... Who knows what is coming out of those orifices?
The "step" on the insides of the Chaos engine ports is getting very annoying. There may be dremeling in their future...

Will the fighters/bombers also be slightly converted to look more nasty?

As for the dreadclaws, does anybody know how big these models normally are? You could of course try to convert your own, make them slightly more organic, like insect eggs or cocoons.

Torpedos could also be make nastier like that, give them that slight organic twist.

Might want to try GrimDarkBits Raptor Pods

His organic boarding pods though might make for better use in this Nurgly awesomeness we see however. :)

At the tiny size they are, I think its just going to be the paint that makes them Nurgle.

Might want to try GrimDarkBits Raptor Pods
https://www.shapeways.com/model/1094219/bfg-raptor-boarding-pods.html?li=shop-results&materialId=6

Thanks for posting this link. Had not seen those, although I had looked at his stuff before

I think the Raptor pods will work given that they are in white/strong material which will be pretty rough at that size. A bit of Dremeling should make then Nurgly enough.

His Nid stuff is interesting, but I think I will save it for the Nids...

They come from the filter element of a Britta water filter. The filter media are the little green balls and charcoal pieces mixed together.
To separate them I put some of the mixture into an edged baking sheet, lifted one end and started tapping the sheet. The balls are round and roll down the inclined sheet, while the charcoal pieces more or less stay put. Its a slow process but does result in a large number of balls in random sizes for the ships

Fluff for the balls on the ships is that they are plague spore carriers, dormant while at absolute zero in space. When the ships approach a planet, they dip into the upper atmosphere, warming the armored spores, which then release for re-entry into the lower atmosphere. When the spores cross a pressure gradient (say 3/4 of one atmosphere) they burst to release the plague spores which then spread on the winds.

Tim

The new artwork is from the Index Chaotica: Terminus Est, which is basically a short eBook available from Black Library.

Well there is some ordnance that still needs to be painted, but the next projects are a Desolator and then the dreadnought class ships discussed in this thread:

Ok, I’m floored.  Beautiful in a slowly rotting, lonely kind of way……….  It looks fairly simple in concept, yet rich in all of its variation.  Your choice of color is the icing on a fly covered maggot cake!  Most excellent work, you're inspiring me to try and reach higher levels.  Thanks for sharing!

Ok, I’m floored.  Beautiful in a slowly rotting, lonely kind of way……….  It looks fairly simple in concept, yet rich in all of its variation.

Yes, it is a pretty simple process. Here is a little tutorial on the puttied texture.

The putty is Magic Sculpt.
Step 1:  Lay out some small balls and snakes of putty in random sizes and at random locations:(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/timdps/Battlefleet%20Gothic/stage1_zpsa77450a4.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/timdps/media/Battlefleet%20Gothic/stage1_zpsa77450a4.jpg.html)

Step 2: Press the putty into the piece with a medium to large ball tool to keep it stuck to the piece. A bit of water on the tool helps keep the putty from sticking to the tool:
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/timdps/Battlefleet%20Gothic/stage2_zps7153753a.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/timdps/media/Battlefleet%20Gothic/stage2_zps7153753a.jpg.html)

Step 3: Use a small ball tool to deepen and enlarge the depressions into Nurgly pits in random patterns:
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/timdps/Battlefleet%20Gothic/stage3_zps3097af7a.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/timdps/media/Battlefleet%20Gothic/stage3_zps3097af7a.jpg.html)

Step 4:  Make a few more... for modular BFG weapons using magnets. Still need to add some of the green balls.

How does that stuff compare with GW / generic "Green Stuff"?

How does that stuff compare with GW / generic "Green Stuff"?

For starters, its MUCH cheaper, around $17 for a full pound of epoxy putty. I find it much easier to use than green stuff, although green stuff will probably hold very fine detail (like 28mm faces) better.

Its a bit softer when being worked so can be pushed around a bit more. It also dries hard, not semi-hard like green stuff. Can be filed, drilled and carved unlike green stuff.

By the way, I just bumped into this epic army (http://s10.photobucket.com/user/mageboltrat/library/Epic%20Nurgle?sort=3&page=1) again, I know it's a different scale and all, but the models might inspire you somehow. One cool touch are the bones/horns growing out of stuff. Would be cool to see some daemon ships that have some sort of rib cages, with guts coming out of it from below. Or small spikes/horns growing out of various parts of the ship.

Of well, food for thought. :)

Had just been thinking about random horns here and there... Might just have a go at making a bunch of horns out of putty and see about adding them to a few ships.

LOL! I find your lack of faith disturbing...

Its about 4600 points without upgrades (there are two magnetized cruisers that can be configured multiple ways).

Per your request I have been working on horns/spikes as well as a DG hood ornament.

Will the horns get extra work? They seem a bit thick, but perhaps that's the close up.

Picked up a few sets of the parts needed to make the DG symbol on ebay and have enough to equip at least the battleships.

The first horns I made were a bit thick and probably wont be used, but the later twisted versions came out thinner. None of them are over 6mm long and they get cut off a bit before being applied to the ships, so size is not a problem.

The infected Marine strike cruisers. One will match the fleet colors while the other will be a recently captured Blood Angel cruiser.

Do you know you are a mad man ?

I like the idea of a captured ship with its original colours remaining.

Everything is wonderfull. Just a remark : The ship end looking very much the same when looking at the complete fleet pictures.

Maybe you could find a way to change little things here and there to keep the global cohesion but to give each ship its own personality. Not a simple task , i perfectly know that.

The idea of the Blood Angel cruiser is a good start.

Yes they do... Wanted to paint this fleet up pretty quickly, so it was pretty much an assembly line process with little in the way of differentiation, although each ship is actually quite unique.

One of the cruisers is a bit lighter than the others because I was trying to make it look like bone, but it did not really work. Another possibility is leaving some of the original DG green and white paint on the ships. We shall see how the Blood Angel strike cruiser comes out.

Anyone have any ideas on how to differentiate the ships using paint?

Thanks,

Tim

It's one of the things that was bugging me; was thinking of how to do it. My personal suggestion would be to paint the ships entirely in original colours first, (metals too, colour scheme etc) and then add the growths on top in their respective colours. At the moment, the ships just look like... well, blobs. There's no real definition, which is a shame as the detail is actually really good. I'd also recommend things like gun barrels maintain their metal colours if they're still guns.

A bit late to go back and completely repaint the whole fleet, so blobs they will remain until I figure out some paint tricks. The ships look nice up close, but blur together when seen from tabletop distance.

Yes, I have been having difficulties deciding on gun colors. First wave had dark gunmetal barrels while the second wave has rust colored barrels and I'm not real happy with either of them. I think I may go back and try drybrushing  the rust barrels with a gunmetal and see what that does.

Yeah, mostly why I didn't want to mention it; too much of a hassle to really redo. Maybe pick a test ship or two and see if you can pick out the original ship hull with standard colours? Probably worth doing it on the ships yet to be painted ^^

As for gun barrels; have you tried silver yet?

I believe it is brass, but it could be bronze that turns green with age and decay. Personally i think doing something similar to whats in my picture would look freaking awesome on your ships and break up the colors you have with something a little different.

I don’t know, I think your ships look good as they are.  As for the fleet blending together, well I think that is kind of cool too.  It’s like a big floating virus in space.  Perhaps you could use the same technique on a planet, some asteroids and some wreckage.  It would give the whole table a sticky yucky infected look.  But hey, that’s just me.  While on the topic as far as your barrels go.  I also think they look good as they are too, but if you’re not feeling the Juju and were talking about ideas for changing them, what about some more purple or blue to bring out the barrels.  It could define them better and well I like the overall look you have now.  Everyone has some kind of metal barrels, your creations smell of puss and having fleshly pinkish, purple with dripping oozing  barrels works for me.  They are close now I think they just need another layer or 2,  or a better idea is if you’re really not liking your builds you could just send them to me I’ll give them a good home!

Both brass and bronze will oxidize green/blue in the right environment. As a ex-jeweler I am very familiar with the way metals oxidize. Worked mostly in gold, but have oxidized gold, silver, brass, bronze, copper, titanium and other metals.

LOL! Slight difference between you and a sloppy 8 year old. Silver works perfectly on the ice blue fleet, but not so much on a Nurgle fleet.

I'm not a chemist or anything, but how would brass oxidize if there's no oxygen in space?

Same way steel rusts on a Nurgle ship in space: Nurgle/Obliterator virus slime covers a bit of the steel/brass/bronze and creates an oxygen rich micro-environment, allowing it to oxidize and then expands or moves on to the next bit of oxidizable metal.  :D

That sounds like fun!

Even though that is a battleship (with teeth!), it brings up the Planet Killer question.. Paint it as Abbadon's flagship or do a Nurgle version? Only have one to play with so must make a choice...

Have incorporated some horns into the ships but have not taken pics yet. Maybe today...

Completely missed the DP backpack parts...

Yeah, I'm not thrilled about the horns either...

BA strike cruiser is a medium deep red. The flash on the camera is about 4" away from the ships when the photo is taken so it washes out the colors a bit.

That's just the base color and the first color wash. LOTS more to do on the paint: adding purple bruises, green and red ichor leakage and rust, paint some of the little balls. Will also be adding back some of the original shipcolors back in, especially on the civilian ships.

A little more color for Marell...  :)

The two blue ships in the center have had their "original" blue paint restored to areas not affected by the Nurgle plague. All of the civilian ships will be done like this in different colors and I will probably try it on some of the DG ships with their original gray/white with green trim.

Also remember that you can see huge versions of these photos buy clicking on them and then enlarging them in Photobucket

Two Desolators pretty much done (still need to do windows). Tried to work original DG colors in there (green prow with gray trim, unpainted everywhere else), but got carried away with the goopy so it does not show much. Will limit the goop a lot more on the next ships so more of the original colors can come through. Used the DG symbol for the first time, but am very not sure about the glowy eyes...

Not a lot of info on DG fleet colors out there. Have only found one pic (Endurance) with anything else but overall gray.

Weapons are modular and magnetic so both hulls can swap between Desolator, Relictor and Desecrator.
Given the very limited number of Despoilers built (3), I could also use these hulls as more fluffy "counts as" Despoilers.

Will do this one a bit differently and paint it in full Death Guard colors before adding any Nurglization and the  Nurglization will be much lighter than on the other ships representing a ship in the early stages of the process.

This is also the beginning (along with the two already done strike cruisers) of a Space Marine fleet.

I see two options:
A. Off white with green trim like early Death Guard armor. Some of the Death Guard ships in Collected Visions are painted this way.
B. Unpainted metal as described in some of the novels.

Unpainted metal seems like it could be pretty boring, so I'm thinking that its going to be off white with green trim.

Note that power armour contains a layer of ceramite, which makes it kinda white/grey, which might be a pretty cool thing to try for the Death Guard ships. Also keep in mind that the ships don't always have the exact same colours as the power armour, look at the contemporary Ultramarines: their armour is blue, but their ships seem to be white.

What makes you doubt the colour?

The Death Guard green is a very nebulous green, very hard to pin down. Have ordered the GW Elysian and Castellan green paints that Forge World uses for their DG and will give them a try. What I have on the ship looks OK, but I want to make a couple more attempts at mixing the color with shade, basic color and highlight color.

Brass or perhaps bronze, although I am going to go very light on "decoration"/bling as it does not go with the DG fluff describing their livery as very plain.

For myself I always wanted to do Death Guard less in obvious green colours and more a sickly white...

But the joy of the universe is that you can really do them any way you want!

Really loving those printed ships!

Working on a few cruisers that will be in pre-Heresy colors with only a little plague infection, similar to the Space Marine battle barge on the previous page (post 134). Today I'm working on making ways to make the the white/gray a sickly color, starting with Reaper Vampiric Skin as the base color.

Sorry, I wasn't telling you what to do, just something I'd thought about doing for EPIC. =)

Got the ram ships and heavy transport done (may go back in a do a little more detail on the heavy).

After washes over the base coat. Used Army Painter Plague Shader (green), Red Tone and Purple Tone washes and am very happy with the color gradations between the mixed colors. These pics try to capture this.

Man, that transport ship looks amazing! Did you spend a lot of time cleaning up the print lines and such? In my own experience (http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=5682.msg53629#msg53629) (model painted by Miniatures of the North) the print lines remain pretty present.

I did do some cleanup on the hull, especially on the curved front surface, but cleanup was pretty minimal. The cargo modules on the other had lines and some of the material was soft, so considerable cleanup was needed.

Most of the lines and planes on the hull are flat and square, so probably print better than curved or angled surfaces (think pixels in images). This ship is cruiser sized, so considerable larger than your ship.

If I were looking at printing masters for resin casting I would be looking for a much higher res printing system.

Nice work, but this is my expectation of you.  I love the color and feel. Although I question the green and white of the engine glow.  It feels off some how.  Did you change colors?  It feels to loud, electric or something.  Your prior glow on prior ships looked really good, but these need some thing.  Overall great work and as a gift for yer efforts you can keeps dem "Rotten Boyz" as day leave dis smell dat even da snots don't cares for.

Four ebay rescues WIP, with two modded for magnets. These guys will be in the early stages of Nurgle goopification and are painted in Heresy era Death Guard colors.

WIP beginnings of a Death Guard Space Marine fleet with only mild Nurglization compared to my chaos fleet and and
some new Nurglized transports.

The Covid building and painting continues.

This pic series is from an Ebay purchase of a bunch of FW Imperial transports that I could not get the paint off of, so had to be sacrificed to Nurgle. Tried various paint removers, but they turned the paint into a gloop that would not come off - horrible!

Half of them were painted green/white prow to represent captured Battlefleet Gothic sector ships and the others were painted in random colors except for the Ecclesiarchal tanker with the once gold prow. Other pics are the engine glow and the whole Nurgle/Death Guard transport fleet.

Ork transports might be fun to build, although I doubt any self respecting ork would build an unarmed ship. :)

If you do build some, try not to get carried away and built 28 of them like some people....

Such great works on here, Tim, the Deathguard ships all look fabby! In a gross, Covid FML type way I mean.

I love the idea of Nurgley ships - less clean up required of knackered models haha!

I love how you've no objection to scumming up perfectly clean imperial vessels and giving them the grandfather's filthy blessings!

It's a nice effect not too ott either. As is often the case...

I'm assuming you are talking about the Space Marine vessels... Someone once mentioned that the main Death Guard fleet looked like a bunch of space turds and I certainly can't argue with him, so I wanted to try a lighter effect early on into the infestation.
