Title: [WM] a smidgen of Dwarves
Post by: Dave on July 13, 2012, 04:26:46 PM
I've been waffling between a bunch of projects lately so progress is sporadic. I have started bulding my Dwarves though, they've been easy to bring along and prep the last month or so. These are my Rangers, I managed to separate all the models from one-another so I can stagger them on the bases and make them look a little more skirmishy.

The Thunderers are all set too, and since I had some room on the strips I added two heroes and my general to them.

The general's just a regular hero with a weapon swap, guarded by the halberdiers from the Throne of Power pack.

The heroes are a "Warrior hero" and a "Thunderer hero". I've also got parts to do a "Dragonslayer hero".

Oh I see!  You made me insecure about my High Elves before I started them, and now my Dwarves are going to be similarly discouraged before they even meet paint. Typical!

But seriously though, this is awesome, looking foward to what you do. = )

Dwarves are all about equal opportunity. I tried to point out the social ramifications but they were having none of it.

Looking forward to the painted dwarfs, and also interested in the Man O War in the background- will we be seeing that later?

I can post the MoW stuff here too, it's up on the blog at the moment:

Really like your small conversions like the weapon swaps and helmet removal of the hero guy! Looking forward to see them painted up for some inspiration, as dwarves are also on my future do list! :)

Work continues on the Dwarves. I finished cleaning up the half-naked Troll Slayers this week. These will be a hoot to paint, maybe I can try for some tattoos on them.

(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-USMowewtjBo/UBLMLcnDx2I/AAAAAAAAMD4/3okq2SPV5Sg/s640/IMG_0088.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-USMowewtjBo/UBLMLcnDx2I/AAAAAAAAMD4/3okq2SPV5Sg/s1600/IMG_0088.JPG)

Also, this is my "Dragon Slayer" hero. The idea is that he'll be being "held back" by his two minders until he's allowed to jump in the fray (the other dwarves get upset when he kills everything before they can get a chance).

(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K0x0KwYtyk4/UBLMLjmdVcI/AAAAAAAAMEA/QQu1qjzVLY0/s640/IMG_0089.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K0x0KwYtyk4/UBLMLjmdVcI/AAAAAAAAMEA/QQu1qjzVLY0/s1600/IMG_0089.JPG)

And this in my Rune Priest, sans anvil. Just some weapon swaps here.

(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-24pJevi9OWI/UBLML0ru46I/AAAAAAAAMEk/5CHG_vqKphQ/s640/IMG_0090.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-24pJevi9OWI/UBLML0ru46I/AAAAAAAAMEk/5CHG_vqKphQ/s1600/IMG_0090.JPG)

I also managed to finish building my artillery. I learned from the High Elf bolt throwers that it'll be easier to paint the crew on the base, base it and then add the cannon on later.

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PqDkhtCORH8/UBLMMFA-mYI/AAAAAAAAMEM/g6jLOWOaeWQ/s640/IMG_0091.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PqDkhtCORH8/UBLMMFA-mYI/AAAAAAAAMEM/g6jLOWOaeWQ/s1600/IMG_0091.JPG)

Same goes for the Flame Cannons. These came with an extra bit that looked like one of Wile E. Coyote's Acme dynamite detonators. I have no idea where it was supposed to go (even after looking at pics of the 28mm Flame Cannon) so I left it off.

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fsj_c9MKko4/UBLMMbYEuuI/AAAAAAAAMEU/utiRZbHOhto/s640/IMG_0092.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fsj_c9MKko4/UBLMMbYEuuI/AAAAAAAAMEU/utiRZbHOhto/s1600/IMG_0092.JPG)

Finally, the Gyrocopters are all set as well. I used clear acrylic rods to base them.

How on Earth do you get the weapon swaps to stick?!  I'm wondering if you have some secret glueing power I could use to repair High Elf spears.
Title: Re: [WM] a smidgen of Dwarves
Post by: Dave on July 28, 2012, 03:47:16 AM
I keep the weapon hafts long, and put a bit of a point on them. The hammer heads I drill into so it's kind of like pinning them. I also use zap a gap ca+.

This army is going to be Top notch....

Did you consider base the helicopters in different highs (with two transparent plastic rods of different lenght). I see something like somewhere and when the two gelicopters were close together it makes a great effect.

Yep, they'll be at different height and one of the blades is at 45 degrees to the other so their bases can sit edge-to-edge.

The Dwarves are now all primed up and ready for some paint (I'm leaning towards a light grey and blue scheme). I'll either be embarking down that road next or painting up the MoW Empire fleet. Not sure which as of yet.

(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2y8bgnHAbPE/UC4-evTuxVI/AAAAAAAAMLw/9mSsBlhwA4A/s640/IMG_0095.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2y8bgnHAbPE/UC4-evTuxVI/AAAAAAAAMLw/9mSsBlhwA4A/s1600/IMG_0095.JPG)

As with my Elf command strips I did a little bit of conversion on the banners. A friend at my FLGS gave me some Warhammer Dwarf shield icons and I turned them into banner tops.

Great, the banners are very important to personalize the unit (a very useful to recognize it in the battle field).

Is that Army Painter spray you're using there?  I've used Uniform Grey and Wolf Grey - the former is probably a better basecoat - the latter is more for Space Wolves only I feel!

Just looking at my own dwarves - really want to do them as Norse dwarves, on snowy bases with red as a dominant colour.
Title: Re: [WM] a smidgen of Dwarves
Post by: Dave on August 17, 2012, 01:56:11 PM
Nope, just Testors grey primer. I tried the AP stuff once, wasn't overly impressed with the results. I get better coverage and a smoother finish with the Testors and a spray basecoat. Probably be doing silver for most of these, with the exception of the slayers and artillery pieces.

I started in on the Dwarf Rangers this week. I got basecoats for their flesh and hair done, as well as a wash on both of those. These guys are pretty much all beard so that's a bit more painting than it sounds like.

(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rKET77oMk8Y/UDfj_BuPY1I/AAAAAAAAMMQ/05kX41Hgpuk/s640/IMG_0097.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rKET77oMk8Y/UDfj_BuPY1I/AAAAAAAAMMQ/05kX41Hgpuk/s1600/IMG_0097.JPG)

Before I highlight these I think I'm going to work on the armor and clothing first, as the beards are higher up. Doing it the other way around will just make for more touch-up work.

I got the metal basecoated and washed this week, next week I'll be highlighting it and putting down the basecoat for the cloth and maybe the leather/wood.

(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AakleX9rSho/UEDKWXtWSXI/AAAAAAAAMMw/HF6pegXY-R4/s640/IMG_0099.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AakleX9rSho/UEDKWXtWSXI/AAAAAAAAMMw/HF6pegXY-R4/s1600/IMG_0099.JPG)

Question for people, under what I'm taking to be the breast plate there's a small raised line. What do people think it is, part of the armor or a belt?

Gotta justify that 5+ armor and 4 hits somehow... Alright, we'll call it a belt.

I've been slacking on the painting and the updating but managed to get in some serious progress this week. All that's left on the Rangers is to touch-up the hair, redo the weapon metal (I don't like how it came out) and do the hats. To that end, does anyone know what these various kinds of hats are called/know of some good pictures for inspiration?

(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ji8YYWhjar4/UHbvc9IcfMI/AAAAAAAAMNU/ZqM4lAFDaOg/s640/IMG_0101.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ji8YYWhjar4/UHbvc9IcfMI/AAAAAAAAMNU/ZqM4lAFDaOg/s1600/IMG_0101.JPG)

Any thoughts on what the hats actually are from a historical standpoint?

Hi Dave, beautiful job.

The hats are some sort of renaissance headgear (do not know how to explain it in english). Durero work shows some of them

A mid-week update since September was so lacking. The Rangers are finished with the paint table. With any luck I should be able to get them sealed and based up by Friday for another picture.

Probably won't be returning to this project for a few more months, but in the mean time... Dwarf Hammerers!

They'll be serving as Warriors (perhaps to denote a magic item) and or body guards of the thane.

The last meaningful work I did on my Warmaster Dwarves was seven years ago (https://the-epic-gamer.blogspot.com/2012/10/ranging-short-and-wide-part-iii.html) (nearly to the day). I'd been humming and hawing about a Warmaster army for awhile now, and settled on the Dwarves when I got back from Scotland a few weeks ago. Since then I've finished the silver and gold, and laid down the first layer for the wood. I have no idea if I'll get these to a usable state before Fall In! in November, but I'm trying.

Very nice method!  I think I'll employ that when the distant day comes that I get around to my dwarves.

Hey, great work here ! And nice unreleased units !

I love the iron and gold choice of colour. Will you paint the faces with a flesh colour or let them as is ?

Flesh, I still have the white, blue, and leathers to do before I get to the flesh and hair.

Those blokes look awesome Dave. Look forward to when you finish them. Reminds me I have about 7 odd blisters of dwarves to attend to myself. Like the Metal and gold contrast. I have been abit intimidated to start on my dwarves but you have given me confidence to at least try.

Reckon you could do a kick starter for some dwarven iron breakers, double handed hammerers amongst your lovely empire figs?

Thanks so much for posting your work - much appreciated.

cheers
Gary

Thanks guys.

The wood and white have now been finished up and I started in on the blue on the dwarves. This is going to be a long one, I think. There's a lot of small areas that I'll need to be careful on. After that it's leathers, flesh and hair. Fourish weeks left before Fall In, still hoping to make it.

I'm gaming tonight so I won't get getting any further on these guys this week. The blue shade and base color are down, it needs 1-2 highlights next and I made hit it with a wash to see if I like it better that way. Leathers, flesh, hair and basing to go!

I put the final two highlights on the blue this past week, managed to get the bases and boots based coated, and now I'm working through all the leather belts, straps and satchels on the dwarves.

(https://res.cloudinary.com/the-epic-gamer/image/upload/w_640/v1562936488/Watching%20Paint%20Dry%202019/IMG_0068.jpg) (https://res.cloudinary.com/the-epic-gamer/image/upload/v1570821693/Watching%20Paint%20Dry%202019/IMG_0068.jpg)

I was also curious last night and took one figure to completion. I didn't use a wash on the skin, I'm not sure if that's the way to go yet. You can also see the leather on this guy too, not sure if it needs one more highlight or not. Thoughts?

Thanks stormwind. The number I'm taking on in one go is definitely wearing on me.

I finished the leather on the dwarves this week, man did that suck. There's just a bunch of tiny leather details everywhere. Anyway, the base-coat for the flesh is down now so it's that and the hair, plus decals and basing.

If I'd kept my dwarves I would have painted them blue and white like this!  In the end it was the pointy ears I did in this scheme, ha ha.

I tried painting things like this to begin with, but eventually I had to force myself to clear my desk of everything but one unit and complete it one at a time!

What decals will you use ? For my part i ues old epic ones, but they are in very bad conditions with those 20 or 30 years...

I'd like to finish the basing on the Dwarves as well as their artillery before the end of the year but I'm burnt out on them for now. This is what I managed to get done last week before Fall In! I finished the skin and hair on the dwarves, and got them on bases along with the ballast. The decals didn't end up working out, they printed poorly and I found myself touching them up far too much. I scrapped the idea and painted simple patterns on the shields to differentiate the Warriors. I'll got back and match the shield pattens on the banners as well.

That's really great painting. I especially like your use of washes and the highlights. And the choice of the light blue as uniform color makes them even more 3D.

Extremly nice dwarf army. I was sceptical at first, but i must say you did very well. Your way of painting after spraying everything is very nice. Only showes what it can do at the very end.

The king is unreleased too (as well as some heroes and runesmiths), he was holding a beer mug though so I'm swapping it out for a hammer. I don't think I'll get to paint this week, maybe next.

I've been working on the Dwarves that I left unfinished two Novembers ago. The bases are nearly done, just another drybrush and flocking left. The artillery needed a bit more work, the crews are nearly done now with just the leather, wood and small details to go. Once they're done I'll finish the wood and metal on the artillery pieces themselves.

I also had two more heroes that were left half-done. They've been along with the ride with the crew. With these done I'd need to do some more building but I have another dozen or so units planned to bring the army up to 3,000 points.

Finally, I did the base coats for the artillery as well. They still need washes and highlights however, hopefully I'll be able to get to that next week.

Also, I wanted to mention I started using Testors Glosscote and Dullcoate via my airbrush, thinned 1:1 with lacquer thinner. I had been using the cans but they're getting so expensive now I thought I'd try the liquid stuff. I can't tell any difference between the two right now, but it sure does dry super fast via the airbrush. I was able to pick up the artillery in under a minute.

really impressive, always amazed at how you work through these mass-army projects (even if this one did take a holiday)

Thanks Apoc. There's pros and cons to it. You can definitely get burned out if you take on too big of chunk, but I definitely think it speeds the process along so long as you can avoid that.

I finished the Warmaster Dwarf artillery pieces this week. I also edged a few bases on the entire army as well. My goal for next week is to finish that up and give myself Flock Lung putting the flock on everything. After that, it's on to something else.

Damn, those are some nice models. Are these all the old GW ones? A mate of mine has recently been printing a shed load of 10mm stuff and he's just done some dwarves.

Thanks Stormwind.

The bases are edged, flocked and I stuck some grass tufts on there so this 2k-ish of Dwarves is done.

I plan to work on the 8mm Napoleonics next, but at somepoint I'll have to come back to finish: 3 Warriors, 1 Thunderers, 1 Rangers, 4 Troll Slayers, 1 Cannon, 2 Gyrocopters and a few more characters. Maybe later this year, we'll see how it goes.

holy-hell man, they are lovely!
Sorry not to have posted here before, but I had to say something at this fetching gathering of stunties!
theres just so much detail on these, your eyes must hurt some after a stint of painting these!
Ive seen well painted 28mm dwarves with less detail than this!
wonderful!

Amazing work. I postponed painting my dwarves as they are even shorter for 10mm than the other WM figs (I must need stronger glasses). Your just showing of of now talking about 8mm Naps  :D.

Good stuff and congrats on the great looking army. You must feel a real sense of satisfaction
cheers

Thanks guys. I hope to do a bit more soon. I find I always leave something unfinished before moving on to the next thing, maybe one day I'll actually "finish" an army.

Adam, I finished up a company of the 8mm French, there's pics on my blog: https://the-epic-gamer.blogspot.com/2021/04/viva-la-8mm-napoleonics.html

Dwarves look good in Blue for sure Dave! Those nap infantry look pretty good. Carabiniers are also very nice - such a pretty unit.

Hope the new roof is an improvement. I am post postponing most of my purchases for fixing things around the home too,  so I sympathise / empathise. I'd love to replace my roof tiles with new one and go solar but that is for a few years away.

take care in these crazy times
cheers

I finished up my Dwarf General and remaining Rune Priest characters for the Historicon tournament last weekend. The General is an unreleased figure that I converted to be holding a hammer instead of a stein. The banner/musician behind him on the right is unreleased as well.

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fugc-klo0f8/YZZfLIJTtGI/AAAAAAAAjfs/fMoThxnJ7_wu2cGF0IfJ5qJGgfYK6yBRwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_0063.JPG) (https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fugc-klo0f8/YZZfLIJTtGI/AAAAAAAAjfs/fMoThxnJ7_wu2cGF0IfJ5qJGgfYK6yBRwCLcBGAsYHQ/s0/IMG_0063.JPG)

One Rune Priest was a weapon swap while the other was unreleased. The banner here is unreleased as well. I need to track down the decals I did for these to truly finish them up. They're lost at the moment.

Really nice looking Dwarves. I'm trying NOT to print off a load of Warmaster stuff at the moment. I'm not sure whether I want to do Orcs n Goblins or Dwarves (first) but these lads look the business..

The General and rune priest are amazing Dave. You should be rather chuffed at the paint job. Love to know where you got the decals for the banner from. Hard enough painting 10mm scale let alone dwarves at 10mm scale.

My WM dwarves are still in their blisters biding their time. Just got to finish off my WM undead, chaos, High elves, skaven, kislev, Empire and dark elves first (Oh dear I think I may have a problem).

Thanks for posting and sharing. Much appreciated.
take care, stay safe.

Adam, the decals were home-made. I found some Dwarf iconography on the web somewhere and printed them out on decal paper.

Hey Adam,
