Title: [WM] a smidgen of Dwarves
Post by: Dave on July 13, 2012, 04:26:46 PM: I've been waffling between a bunch of projects lately so progress is sporadic. I have started bulding my Dwarves though, they've been easy to bring along and prep the last month or so. These are my Rangers, I managed to separate all the models from one-another so I can stagger them on the bases and make them look a little more skirmishy.

The Thunderers are all set too, and since I had some room on the strips I added two heroes and my general to them.

The general's just a regular hero with a weapon swap, guarded by the halberdiers from the Throne of Power pack.

The heroes are a "Warrior hero" and a "Thunderer hero". I've also got parts to do a "Dragonslayer hero".

Also, this is my "Dragon Slayer" hero. The idea is that he'll be being "held back" by his two minders until he's allowed to jump in the fray (the other dwarves get upset when he kills everything before they can get a chance).

And this in my Rune Priest, sans anvil. Just some weapon swaps here.

I also managed to finish building my artillery. I learned from the High Elf bolt throwers that it'll be easier to paint the crew on the base, base it and then add the cannon on later.

Same goes for the Flame Cannons. These came with an extra bit that looked like one of Wile E. Coyote's Acme dynamite detonators. I have no idea where it was supposed to go (even after looking at pics of the 28mm Flame Cannon) so I left it off.

Finally, the Gyrocopters are all set as well. I used clear acrylic rods to base them.

Post by: Dave on July 28, 2012, 03:47:16 AM: I keep the weapon hafts long, and put a bit of a point on them. The hammer heads I drill into so it's kind of like pinning them. I also use zap a gap ca+.

Did you consider base the helicopters in different highs (with two transparent plastic rods of different lenght). I see something like somewhere and when the two gelicopters were close together it makes a great effect.

Post by: Dave on August 17, 2012, 01:01:57 PM: The Dwarves are now all primed up and ready for some paint (I'm leaning towards a light grey and blue scheme). I'll either be embarking down that road next or painting up the MoW Empire fleet. Not sure which as of yet.

As with my Elf command strips I did a little bit of conversion on the banners. A friend at my FLGS gave me some Warhammer Dwarf shield icons and I turned them into banner tops.

Post by: Stormwind on August 17, 2012, 01:22:58 PM: Is that Army Painter spray you're using there? I've used Uniform Grey and Wolf Grey - the former is probably a better basecoat - the latter is more for Space Wolves only I feel!

Just looking at my own dwarves - really want to do them as Norse dwarves, on snowy bases with red as a dominant colour.

Post by: Dave on August 17, 2012, 01:56:11 PM: Nope, just Testors grey primer. I tried the AP stuff once, wasn't overly impressed with the results. I get better coverage and a smoother finish with the Testors and a spray basecoat. Probably be doing silver for most of these, with the exception of the slayers and artillery pieces.

Post by: Dave on August 24, 2012, 08:34:08 PM: I started in on the Dwarf Rangers this week. I got basecoats for their flesh and hair done, as well as a wash on both of those. These guys are pretty much all beard so that's a bit more painting than it sounds like.

Before I highlight these I think I'm going to work on the armor and clothing first, as the beards are higher up. Doing it the other way around will just make for more touch-up work.

Question for people, under what I'm taking to be the breast plate there's a small raised line. What do people think it is, part of the armor or a belt?

All that's left on the Rangers is to touch-up the hair, redo the weapon metal (I don't like how it came out) and do the hats. I'd been humming and hawing about a Warmaster army for awhile now, and settled on the Dwarves when I got back from Scotland a few weeks ago. Since then I've finished the silver and gold, and laid down the first layer for the wood. I have no idea if I'll get these to a usable state before Fall In! in November, but I'm trying.

I tried painting things like this to begin with, but eventually I had to force myself to clear my desk of everything but one unit and complete it one at a time!

Post by: Dave on November 22, 2019, 02:20:10 PM: I'd like to finish the basing on the Dwarves as well as their artillery before the end of the year but I'm burnt out on them for now. This is what I managed to get done last week before Fall In! I finished the skin and hair on the dwarves, and got them on bases along with the ballast. The decals didn't end up working out, they printed poorly and I found myself touching them up far too much. I scrapped the idea and painted simple patterns on the shields to differentiate the Warriors. I'll got back and match the shield pattens on the banners as well.

Also, I wanted to mention I started using Testors Glosscote and Dullcoate via my airbrush, thinned 1:1 with lacquer thinner. I had been using the cans but they're getting so expensive now I thought I'd try the liquid stuff. I can't tell any difference between the two right now, but it sure does dry super fast via the airbrush. I was able to pick up the artillery in under a minute.

I finished the Warmaster Dwarf artillery pieces this week. I also edged a few bases on the entire army as well. My goal for next week is to finish that up and give myself Flock Lung putting the flock on everything. After that, it's on to something else.

I plan to work on the 8mm Napoleonics next, but at somepoint I'll have to come back to finish: 3 Warriors, 1 Thunderers, 1 Rangers, 4 Troll Slayers, 1 Cannon, 2 Gyrocopters and a few more characters. Maybe later this year, we'll see how it goes.

Hope the new roof is an improvement. I am post postponing most of my purchases for fixing things around the home too, so I sympathise / empathise. I'd love to replace my roof tiles with new one and go solar but that is for a few years away.
