Title: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on May 21, 2012, 07:09:55 PM
Righto - I thought I'd put a post here otherwise I shall go mad and not do anything.  I am finally, FINALLY getting the courage to pick up a brush and try painting some models.

The sum total of GW or other models I have painted in my life can be summed up as:

A mishmash of awful attempts at painting some Epic ("Space Marine" as it was known then) age 5-7.
About 20 marines from Space Crusade and 2 of the first Rhino tanks when I was about 9.
2 "Spyrer" models for Necromunda and 5 Ratling snipers when I was 13.

And now at 26 I still feel like a kid, so please please be kind when I do do finish something and post it. x-D

I've been delayed by bad weather stopping me from spray-undercoating things but I finally got some black on some units.  The problem is  trying to go over every nook and cranny by hand with Chaos Black to make sure no bare metal shines through.  I am seriously considering hand varnishing them when they are done as they seem so vulnerable to knocks.  I am only really used to plastic, an exclusively metal system is a new experience for me.

One thing delaying me was figuring out how to paint them.  I saw others using lollipop sticks to glue them on for painting, found some in my local art shop and started glueing and scraping off flash and mould lines!

I had originally intended to paint them with a beach scheme, suggesting white sands of Ulthuan and united defenders marching out to face their foe.  However, fiddling with some of my colours, all I seemed able to produce was a pale fleshy colour, or something that looked like snow.  I changed my mind and experimented further.  I thought I'd try making the ground look like purple or blueish shale, a rocky beach but a magical pointy eared rocky tree hugger beach perhaps. =-P  So I tried Adeptus Battle Grey.  then a dilute Hawk Turquoise and badab black to wash - then when that dried a drybrush of space wolves grey.  It's not perfect but I think it'll do, especially for my first army!

For now, some pics of the most dispiriting manual tasks of fiddling with pinning eagles and my dragon, and the joy of the first parcel of elves arriving.

Soon I will get the Vallejo Grey Pumice I need to start preparing bases - that should be a confidence building task, fingers crossed!

I am happy that you start painting your first army. Your background sounds almost like mine. I painted only a few whfb minis as a teen and years later I am working on my third wm army. Hope to see as many armies from you and lots of pics.  :) Wish you luck.

Good luck with your first army. A very daunting task but well worth it! :)

Just a small hint from me, I personally dislike the lollipop sticks and just use a random (in my case oversized) piece of wood.  But it gives you a good and steady hold over the models and you can just repeat the same brush strokes over and over for the whole unit. (if the factory painting suits your style)

For beach sand you could try desert yellow as a base with a bleached bone drybrush.

That's a lot of elves!  Looking forward to your progress. :)

Sounds... interesting!  Any pics of that yet?

I agree with that.  I've got some of my older models on lollipop sticks, but started sticking newer ones on oversized versions. (also from an art/craft shop)  Chunkier and easier to hold.
Though if you've already got the regular size, Stormwind, I'd recommend sticking one strip per stick.  Leaves plenty of room to grip either end.

Raid Starbucks !! (they have those very nice LONG sticks) or a local DIY (they will give you sticks for paintstirring)

@ Stormwind...  I would go for a generic Bounty Beach sand (white decorator sand will work nicely !) and model the beachy bits  on your bigger character bases...

Thanks for the encouragement!

Oh dear, as you can see from these photos I already sued up a wholepack of lolly sticks glueing units!

Here is a close up shot with natural light thank goodness which shows the base of the reavers with the mentioned colouring.  I think I've given up on the lighter beach white / yellow / bone colour idea at this point.

Hurrah!  This pumice just came in the post.  The plan is to put that on the bases separately, spray and paint them separately then glue the strips of models onto the gaps I leave.  Not perfect but I think a fair game plan for my first army. =-P

An attempt to use the Vallejo Grey Pumice!

**Sorry for underwhelming post - I was trying to post last week and it kept giving me database errors after I'd typed out but not saved a bigger post. =-<

Those look like some rather stunty elves...

Never knew dwarfs had infiltrators. :)

Let me know how the pumice works for you. Always had trouble blending the bases into the ground, especially with archer strips.
Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on July 10, 2012, 10:13:33 PM
*Redface*

They do look stunty, but there's some Phoenix Guard sneaking up behind them... ;-)

Oops, forgot to say, since the forum had eaten all my posts...

I have been going through the mechanical stuff of stripping and preparing a whole bunch of Dwarf Slayers and Dwarf Warriors, in the hopes of eventually having a starter army of Dwarves to face off against my Elves, so that I can turn up at the local gaming club and try to teach an interested party...

Also, I found that the advice on lollipop sticks is accurate here, and so my new idea is to base half my strips on the stands to begin with, paint them as they are they, THEN glue the ones on wood sticks on afterwards after they are painted.

That way, the pumice won't look so bad.  It's looking great so far... What I do is use a "dead" modelling knife blade to put it into place.

Today I've been experimenting,  using Astronomicon Grey as a base BEFORE putting on the ceramite white for robes, and using Deneb Stone on archer bows as a basecoat before Bleached Bone.  Also doing the slate colours on bases.

Let me say that the new GW Imperial Primer is great, it's working a lot better than Chaos Black for me at filling in the gaps and covering the surfaces of units that didn't get completely covered by the spraypaint.

Your basing method is the same as mine, I find it works well. It is worth noting that it tends to shrink when drying so may need two coats (though you usually don't neet to), it's also worth knowing that it's pretty soft and can be cut with a knife when dry to if you put too much behind the front base you can trim it to fit very easily). I also don't like the lolly-stick approach and tend to stick strips to paint pots as I find them easier to hold.

Good luck with it all, I wish you the speed and focus that I lack as a painter!

Hey, the pic is a bit far to see the base well, but anyway.. Great pictures of space marines!
you draw so well.

Looking forward to see some paint in your figures and have fun

Very good!

Personally, I base my front line of figures, spray them black then dry brush with white before adding base colours/inks. The second rankers I just hold them with my fingers, have never bothered with the whole lolly pop stick thing?

I guess its what you're used to.

Just to add a couple of things - to show what I mean when I glue and base half the archers.  And the gaps I've left for the rear strip on infantry.

Part completed HE bolt throwers, first experiment with Imperial Primer as manual undercoat.

- Astronomicon Grey base coat
- Ceramite White on top of that.  Chainmail for the metal - will use blue on the side parts - was considering gold but I really want my elves to look cold and alien if possible.

I'm trying Charadon granite as a very dark brown on the little tree stumps that are on the HE bases, want to suggest trampled wood I guess.

There, finally finished the throwers, that's two lots of crew based and the "shale" painted, now to paint the crew themselves!  These are the first things I've painted as an adult and it feels good. =D

They look pretty damn good. I mean, there's not a whole lot you can do with this scale. I like the highlights on the blue parts and good contrast everywhere else. Even though the photo is a bit over-saturated you can still see the contrast, so that's good painting on your part  :D

Also, base looks really good. If "shale" was what your were going for, shale is what you got. Would like to see the loaders done too!!!

Hello all,

I am really sorry, this isn't a specialist games thing - though it's an Infinity model, which is very much in the spirit of Inquisitor and Necromunda!

The reason I am posting this is that this is the first model I have finished in about 8 or 9 years I think.  And it's given me a bit of a boost.  There's passing interest in my club for Epic - but right now I feel I burning desire to finish the rest of this Infinity group, and sort out a Saga warband of Normans.

The figure looks awesome. I specially like the face, with the beard. Robes and armour looks wear, cool.

Infinity has really good figures, and is quite common here in Spain.

In fact i love these miniatures, i have a painted nomad army and an aleph army still in the box :-)

Your ariadna's army is going to be beautiful if all of the miniatures have the same level...

Sorry but it looks like all my painting is going to be non Specialist stuff for the foreseeable future. =-<

I still want to share pics with my comrades though.

This is my first Line Kazak for my Infinity force!  Took me ages to get the face right but I think I am learning!

I have some Merovingians cleaned up and based too so I have them to paint if I want a break from green camo to grey camo. = )

I like it. Wonderful job on the eyes, they add a lot of personality. My only comment is that the blue corneas make him look like he's addicted to melange.

Ha ha, thanks.  The problem is that his right eye is perfect, but the sculpt has... just the tiniest fraction of a millimeter drop on his left eye which makes it almost impossible to dot a pupil and make them look even.  So I compromised and just suggested a bright blue.

Just to show I've not been idle...

My friends at my club are getting into Black Powder and Blitzkrieg Commander II.

Both of these systems are very heavily based on Warmaster, in the very least in terms of the command roll 2D6 structure.

I am hoping in time to get them to play my game, this year if possible. :-X

In the meantime this is what I've been up to...

1: An Eternity Stair terrain piece for my friend.  He paid me with some GW drybrushes which have come in useful for scenery!

2: Metros for Infinity.  Still haven't finished these properly but proud of what I did.  2 of them, but the person I played with is moving house to the Midlands and has also gone on Missionary work to Honduras.  So... Kind of hard to play with him again so Infinity is mothballed unless an older club member comes out of the wood work to play. =D

3: Levies for Saga.  We have a tournament coming up later this month, still have 16 cavalry and 8 footmen to paint for it, just finished undercoating and basing them now.  This crowd of 12 is the first unit I have ever finished painting.  Ever. =)

4: Warmaster Bridges!  From the Kalistra Hordes and Heroes 10mm terrain resin range.  I've got 3, these 2 are already passable, one left to go.   Just painted them today!

My first ever finished Epic unit! A space wolf rhino.

And some more on the assembly line.  When I get a better picture of the falcons I will post them.  19 falcons I'm painting in the Mymera colour scheme.

Just realised I didn't even post some better non-SG pics I had along with the falcons!

Here we have the last Infinity model I finished.  He's been touched up more since then - but these 5 models I poured hours into are mothballed as the one guy I played with has moved away to Derby and no one regularly plays around here.

Next there's a group shot of half of my Norman army for SAGA - really proud of these - first units I've ever painted. =-)

Finally are my 19 falcons awaiting finishing touches and also for me to undercoat then paint the turrets.

BEHOLD!

I am not dead!

My first ever actually honestly definitely FINISHED warmaster units.  The bolt throwers I did a while ago, finally varnished them, painted the base sides and put static grass on.

Dragon Ogres I finished last Friday and is my first Chaos unit!  My gaming group who have had far far less time than me and fewer options for modelling are shaming me by racing ahead and painting 100s of points of Warmaster so now I have no choice but to get to painting it (And to figure out a good storage solution so they don't get chipped once they're done!)

Got some 40mm Renedra bases at Colours, perfect for Generals and large hero bases.

Mounted my dragons on them.  Used bits of a Chaos Vehicle sprue on the Chaos Dragon to look like it has come out of some horrible ruins in a blasphemous ritual!

High Elf Dragon has a little artefact from the Warhammer Elf Mage plastic kit, works perfectly as a rune stone here!

These models are hellish to build / glue / pin / green stuff but I think so long as I'm gentle with them they should survive :-X

Vallejo grey pumice with a sprinkling of the fine grey slate in the GW basing kits (Assume that's the same as all the other basing kits!)

And now another unit, Harpies! Had a little trouble getting my brush in - resigned myself to not adding much detail - really wanted to have another unit finished - if I can get a functioning army painted - I can feel that accomplishment and move on to Dwarves. Or Elves. Or Kislev. Or Empire. :-X

That's really nice stuff Stormwind.

Did you use the new GW colors for the knight's armor?
Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on December 09, 2013, 10:57:05 PM
Thank you!

It's a mix - the base colour of my blues is the incredibly pigment dense Necron Abyss from the old range. You have to be so careful with it as it's the densest pigment of all the GW paints I think - very staining.

Then Regal Blue or the brighter Mordian blue - and the new Caledor Sky paint to finish off.

The banner is done with the new Teclis Blue and the old Ice Blue mixed to make it brighter.

Really nice. The Blues work really well - as someone said previosuly, it makes a nice change from the usual red and/or green chaos armies that you see (including mine!).

Might have to pinch that colour scheme the next time a chaos brigade demands to be painted.

Phew!

This off-balance model was more trouble than anything else. Finally finished it and put 6 coats of Matt Varnish on it as it is gonna fall over on that wing and arm a LOT.

Two pikes on the base are maybe a little bit too much. One would have been better i think.

I like the colours a little bit less. I have never found red and blue where colours fitting well together, but it's my own perception and i know GW have promoted those colours heavily.

That's going to be a cool centerpiece of your army. Especially the oxidation effects on the metal look really nice. I like the red and blue combo: It fits well with the rest of the army and gives the dragon a nice chaotic flair.

Go go, post some group shots of your army ;)

It's not ready to be shot yet. I'm working on a south american concept for my undeads. Aztec and maya undead inspired. With a squated mumy on a palanquin, and eagle and jaguar warriors for skeletons. And an undead giant jaguar as classical sphynx.

What I did with my chaos dragon is to cut out a thick, heavy circle of lead roofliner sheet and then stick it to the base and file, fill and paint. Result: One dragon that does not fall over!

With 4 more in the airing cupboard with the glue setting.

I want a couple of towers of these boxes on my bookshelf so as I build things I can stow them away.

Hi, a nooby question..

You mention Matt Varnish earlier. I've tried the GW matt varnish spray and found it dulled the colours slightly, particularly metallics. I was wondering what varnish you used?

Your miniatures look great by the way and neat box. See you have access to a laser cutter.

It's a fair question to ask!  I use this Vallejo Matt Varnish:

http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/en_US/model-paints/auxiliary-products/3

It has a slight colour so you know to dilute it with water until the colour is much less noticeable and not to let it pool in recesses.  I normally do 2 coats on my models but maybe I should do more. AFTER that has dried I then glue static grass on.

As for the laser cutter, no ha ha, that's from these guys!

Just painting the rear strips on a lollipop stick separately before sticking them on!

Hi, going back to my earlier question about the varnish.  Following your advice I got hold of some Vallejo acrylic matt varnish. I've watered it down a lot, maybe 1:50, and it still seems quite milky. It applies clear,  but I'm wondering how much varnish I'm actually applying.

How much do you water it down by?

Thanks

Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on January 22, 2014, 11:24:21 PM
That sounds about right.  Once you apply it, it looks clear.

I just make sure it doesn't pool too much in recesses and on the base - just like you would with a normal wash.

Then I put it into the airing cupboard to dry for 20 minutes - then I repeat the process.

Try it on a test model first.

I started doing 2 coats but now I do several if I have time.

Best varnish technique.
Halfords Clear coat first.
Followed by a light dusting of testors dullcote.
I used vallejo on some other projects and found it to dull down the model too much taking the vibrancy out of the colours.

40,000 pts of warmaster can't be wrong ;)

Vallejo Matt acrylic varnish turns milky and hazy when you water it down. It has issues with the medium. I uses to use it extensively, and I'd actually add acrylic medium to the varnish. Now I use vallejo polyurthane Matt varnish, it's friggin awesome, and super durable. I strongly recommend it.

This is a pic of the two terrain bases I started making 2 weeks ago.  They are 3mm thick MDF cut up with a jigsaw and then filed round the edges. Then they are sanded along the very edge to make them look less harsh and I layer on the resin with an old modelling knife and an old paintbrush.  I bought the white pumice without thinking when I should have bought the black sand one instead, would have saved me some black undercoating paint!  Whilst it was still wet I added some shredded slate from a Warhammer basing kit.

I bought some not-that-cheap-but-cheaper-than-Games-Worshop-by-a-mile acrylic in Black and Brown from my local independent art shop and then Painted them so far.  It's still very dark. Going to use the dregs of some GW adeptus battlegrey and some Khemri brown mixed up to lighten it and add the grey rocks on.  Then I will give a light coat of PVA as a cheap varnish and add some big patches of GW static grass.

I plan to use it for Warmaster, Warhammer, 40k, SAGA etc.

Terrain bases are just a fab idea.

Yep. For my part, i'm happy with my white sand pumice (or equivalent from Prince August). Rather white than black, for you can turn your white into black easily, while the reverse is not possible. And white basing is far lighter. I prefer, for my part.

About grass, beware not to add to much of them. I consider in 10 mm range sanding is ok for making grass. If you had classical flocage, in will add some extremly high grass. Frequently, there are not so many of them in nature. And they are regrouped as sod rahter than large areas.

I'm not really fond of the green spots.

For my part, i found the grass flocage too high for common grass. I paint my sanded bases in earth and then green to make common grass, and add some clumps of this grass flocage here and there, with pieces of cork to add rocks and avoid this spot aspect.

Not much to show - but since I'm trying to get back into Warmaster generally, I thought I'd resurrect this thread...

I saw in the other thread about putting banners from 28mm kits onto metal warmaster sculpts so I had a go at it, myself.

I used the Warhammer Dragon Prince pennants that go on their lances - trimmed down in size and glued on to the Silver Helms.  I also found that the more dynamic fluttering pieces of cloth that the White Lions have in their kit and in the chariot kit attached to their axes and horns etc. might be suitable for the Reavers.  The Reavers have a smaller banner pole.

Also - Sally 4th were wonderful and custom cut me a bunch of Warmaster inlays at no extra cost!  I figured I didn't need 3 command stands in every box so asked for an experimental design with more room for normal units!

Thanks! I have 9 of these, now.

Not very big, when my Dad gets some time we'll chop up some more.  Ideally I want enough to do 2 tables.

In addition, in the long run I would like to do some yellow/brown "wasteland" ones to represent Khemri / Araby on a desert cloth.

In a perfect world I would also have some frozen / tundra ones for Kislev / Empire / Naggaroth but that's for a time in the far future.

Just a little thing I thought I'd do, here, some objective markers.

When we played a friendly little Warmaster tourney last year we did a basic "capture the three treasure piles" scenario so that it wasn't a simple free for all.

I've been meaning to make some kind of thing like that - and the EDG elven obelisks proved perfect.

I might make some desert ones, too, not sure at the moment.

Ha ha! I'm going a lot slower than intended, but still much faster than last year.

Another unit of Chaos Hounds finished! 4 in total now, enough for 2000 points as Chaos.  Hounds are the only filler unit that Chaos have so I will ALWAYS field the maximum allowed for breakpoint purposes.

I started on a Chaos Warriors and a Chaos Knight unit but felt I needed a break so think it might actually be dwarf cannons next.  It might not be efficient but my desire is simply to be able to look at my desk and not feel tired. =-P

Hey all!

I have been bitten by an Epic bug and have been posting on the Tactical Command forum.  I've got a whooole bunch of models and some on order still to come.

So now my lead mountain is about 80% Warmaster, 20% Epic. =-D

First off is some Grey Knights.  I have Space Wolves, too but I still need to get the infantry for them.

I painted all my rhinos in one go as a test colour scheme and I'm super happy with the result.

Epic is a great game, and those Epic Stormravens are my bane...

I've recently been wondering if Warmaster could benefit from a small touch of Epic rules- mainly, that if an order is failed the target unit (or one of the target units, if ordering a brigade) can still do one limited action before the usual fail effect happens (eg. the unit can move at up to half speed, but cannot move within 1cm of an enemy unit). A blunder (or Giant goes Wild) would override this.
Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Aquahog on April 21, 2015, 07:04:14 AM
I've considered the same as I came into Warmaster from Epic but in the end I think that is what the iniative movement is for. Perhaps increase iniative range to 60 cm?
Title: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain

I very much like the alternating activation of units between the players and retaining initiative. I feel it gives a more interesting flow and you dont sit around and wait as much as with the IGOUGO that Warmaster uses... Warmaster with alternating activation + retaining would be very interesting but probably a lot of work to implement?

Back on topic!

A couple of mini projects, finished! It really annoyed me people mixing up their thrown dice and the ones they'd used for wound markers - or markers for carried over wounds and flesh wounds.

So I got some Minibits mdf frames with dice, the largest ones they do at 12mm.  Red dice for fresh wounds, blue dice for carried over wounds. =)

Not perfect but I think a damn sight better than any other one I've seen.  I have another 10 to make, but in more arid colours. With 20 in total that should work for all but the most elaborate battles and shooting phases. =-P

The "wound markers" in metal there are ones that I now use for confusion markers.  4 dwarf ones, 3 empire and 3 high elf.  I'm not going to make ones for each faction, just use these old official ones as generic.  I have others for orc/Chaos/undead that I will paint in arid colours.

But I did these - test bases for Storm Ravens for my Epic Grey Knights, and also test bases for all the basing in the army, really.  Just need to varnish them.  not sure if I should add some grass tufts/static grass or if that will spoil the look.

Sorry, just realised my reply was lacking in the appropriate "!" and "=-P" faces so seemed humourless.  Yeah, as I was painting them I realised "This... this looks a lot like pi..."

I've already started painting the 2nd unit with the same symbol.  Oh well. =-P

It's important to appease the gods of probability when playing WM, so a variety of mathematically-based symbols/runes might be needed!?

Finished off my dragon!

It's hard to get a good focus shot on such a gangly figure.  I found it a bit of a chore to paint but at least it's better balanced than the Chaos Dragon was!

Proud of the result, will varnish and static grass it tomorrow.  Onto bolt throwers or command stands next probably.

Post by: empireaddict on August 20, 2015, 10:29:54 PM
That is also looking good.  Based on previous dragon experiences, it might be worth weighting the base a bit as gangling can equal toppling.

Nothing to do with the paint-job which is excellent...but why do GW always insist on giving riders on flying things headgear that you most definitely would not want to wear while flying?

"Dive on those foul orcs my drake dive and we shall....oh my head came off due the wind resistance OF MY TWO FOOT TALL HELMET!!!!"

Thanks!

And yes, I like to have bases looking very distinct.  Some people go as far as to have transparent acrylic bases so they fit into every battlefield, but for me I want them to be rocky, snowy, arid, grassy, anything but the 90s GW style of snot green with flock on top. =D

Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain

The aesthetics of base edges are often overlooked.  They very much 'frame' the minis and should - as suggested above - say something about the wider context of the troop types.  I favour gloss enamels, usually black or brown.

I'll stop now as I'm beginning to sound like some sort of pretentious art critic!

Ah, Gorrin, your stuff looks fine, I mean the tone deaf GW studio style from back in the day in White Dwarf.  No matter what colour scheme the model had it had to have that snot green edge. =-P

I colour code bases in SAGA, actually:
Hearthguard: Blue (as in blue blooded elites)
Warriors: Red (as in red blooded warriors eager to prove themselves)
Levies: Green (as in they will run away)
Lord: Purple (as in royal purple) =-P

And they look good and it work, I tend to identify units buy their shield colours or clothing, the peasants have drabber gear.
Some of my units can be 2 Hearthguard one game and one of warriors the next, other than that as Normans they really are wuciwug so I need no further definition.

Been tidying up some warmaster stuff - I made a larger Sally 4th box to put my dragons and other giant command stand type bits in, and finally polished off these terrain templates.

I now have 7 wood templates for the cenral board, and also two corners and two side woods pieces.  My ideal will be to do a very heavily wooded board with roads going through it, as is shown in the Warmaster rulebook scenario The Flight of Countess Heugenloewd (p86).  That needs about 16 wood pieces.

I'd like to be able to make such a heavily wooded table for Lustrian or Wood Elf based battles, too.

Those look fantastic!!! What do you use for your texture and colors?
Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on December 02, 2015, 01:26:09 PM
I use Vallejo Pumice which comes in different colours > white, grey, earth brown, black, desert sand etc.

I started using grey but then you have to paint it black and colour it.  Now I use black and go brown over it.

You can sprinkle sand or little slate chippings on top of it as it's wet so give it texture for when it dries.

I bought from the art shop some cheap synthetic paint brushes and a big tube of black paint and one of brown, both acrylic.  Those are your base colours and I sloppily drybrush it grey in patches then paler brown over the rest, sometimes after a wash of Army Painty tone ink.

I have some desert WIP ones but they haven't turned out brilliantly so right now they are buried in a big box until I can work up the energy to redo a desert board.

What I've found in 10mm is that metal over a white surface followed by a black wash leads to a surprisingly good looking result very quickly.
Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on January 19, 2016, 10:10:32 AM
The thing is that when I look over the WM models, they are so insanely detailed, most of them, and with SO MANY nooks and crannies... What I end up doing is spending a lot of time making sure I can see no bare metal.

I'm not sure that a black wash would be enough to rid me of the fear of having unpainted bits peeking out. =P

Sure, for fleshy stuff that definitely works!  But for heavy armoured characters like the Silver Helms, with LOTS of stark lines between inorganic colours like bridles, shoulder pads, gloves, cloth, tabbards, it's harder in my experience to go down that route.

Remember that I am a quite inexperienced, conservative painter and it takes a lot to make me break out of my habits and try something new. ^.^

Thanks, guys!

They're the ones on this page:
http://www.hovelsltd.co.uk/10mmrange.htm

In the original Warmaster rulebook it's said that the bridges or crossing places shouldn't be wide enough for the longer side of the base to go across.  I've been looking for ages for bridges that are that width, not too long, and don't have silly bits of partial road or river on them which would restrict which bits of terrain I use them with.

As for spiders, well I have researched spiders for a Shellob spawn model for LOTR in 10mm but it's difficult to get the scale right.  The little plastic spiders in the WFB Arachnarok are probably the closest thing I can think of.

Currently have 2000 points of Dark Elves glued, based and basecoated, deciding on a paint scheme for them now.

OK, these aren't finished, but thought I should show that I've been working on something!

These Hero stands were inspired by one of the lovely fiction/"fluff" stories in the original Warmaster rulebook.  In this story, a commanding officer and his cohorts see from a distance a comrade being chased down and slain by enemy forces.  Before this scout dies, he shoots an arrow directly at the feet of the officer, wrapped with an important message that could change the tide of the battle.

The idea of the High Elves being such exceptional shots that they could use bows and arrows to telegraph each other messages seemed to me too good to pass up.

On each Hero stand you can see the officer listening to their scribe reading out a scroll (or taking dictation, maybe?) as the archer prepares to fire the message to their peers down the line.  The archers were a spare normal archer strip I got with odds and ends on eBay.  I clipped it in half and trimmed the base to fit it on here.  The Hero figures and scribes are normal figures found in the original Warmaster High Elf command blister.

Copy paste from the blog:

"According to the Warhammer: Uniforms & Heraldry of the High Elves, the rune is Edra, which stands for "Laughter, the cruelty of Fate". This feels appropriate considering my dice rolls..."

=-P

So, the blues.  Well, I used to base them with Mordian Blue, but Regal Blue and Caledor Sky also work as bases.  Then layer Teclis Blue is the brightest one on the Spearmen.  The hems of their robes I do at the end with straight Teclis Blue, I don't bother building that up.

For the Silver Helms I take it up to Hoeth Blue, a newer Layer paint from GW.  I've been doing that very inefficiently in the past.  I might have been painting for a couple of years now but still find it hard to break out of bad habits or slow ways of doing things that duplicate work.

Beautiful work,

Looks like I might have 3 new warmaster converts. They even bought 10mm armies at Salute.

I bought a "Kingdoms of Ind" army for which I'll write my own list. I just need a Kali-type demon model that will fit in. So that's just 5,000 points of Chaos, 4,000 each of Elves, Dwarfs and O&G, 2,500 points of Empire, 1,500 of Kislev, 2,000 of Albion and Undead and...NOW...a Kingdoms of Ind to do. All that while shoehorning in Oldhammer and Kings of War.

Experience tells me not to look at the Polarfox site anymore. Undead and Bret heroes you say? HERE'S MY CREDIT CARD!!!

Good times.

Wow those guys really pop. Lovely brushwork and the standard is really well done. I just like 2 nights ago was painting symbols on High elf spear-elf shields and yours are really well done and consistent. I can appreciate the effort required. Also well done on having all the spears intact - a rarity amongst those lovely WM Spear elves.

Thanks for the photies  :)

Thanks for your kind words, guys.

These fellas clearly need varnishing and static grass, but I just want to post pictures of them to show I've done something!

I hate chaos chariots.  They have tonnes of nooks and crannies and they are so warped that trying to get them flat on a base is a pain.  Finally got this one done, and another one on the go. ;.;

I never use them as Dragon Ogres. =P

With my understanding opponents I proxy them as Chaos Marauder Horsemen. When I paint my proper Horsemen figures, then I'll use them as Chaos Chariot figures.

Latest efforts!

My 2nd Chaos Chariot unit, finally figured out the way to put the riders.

Also a 2nd High Elf Giant Eagle unit.  For this one I tried to raise the central figure up by mounting it on the plastic lion head ruin piece you get with the Warhammer 28mm White Lions set.  Didn't quite work but at least it still fits in the little figure boxes I have!

I painted them up to look like Harris Hawks based on a pleasant experience I had with birds of prey at a small centre near where I live:

curiuos on the chaos chariots.  I have been trying to figure out a transport for my armies and when I come across my chariots, they do NOT fit side by side because of the spikes on the wheels, does yours do the same? like they are just too wide.

I hope I assembled them incorrectly and maybe I can fix something?

Counting the Dragon Ogres as Marauder Horsemen:

Chaos Army, 2270 points
Warmaster Armies
----------------------------------------------------------------
 450 -  3 Chaos Warriors
 270 -  3 Marauder Horsemen
 600 -  3 Chaos Knights
 120 -  4 Chaos Hounds
 190 -  2 Chaos Chariots
  65 -  1 Harpies
 110 -  1 Chaos Spawn
 125 -  1 General
 160 -  2 Hero
 180 -  2 Sorcerer

But that is a list without Chaos Marauder Infantry, which I have been digging out, dusting off and undercoating along with (this evening) the Horsemen.  So it is STILL not a legal painted army. =P

As for High Elves, they are very unbalanced and rudimentary, need 2 more spearmen and 2 more archer units at least, then some Reavers.  Not sure I'd take all this command as well when it takes up a quarter of my points!

High Elf Army, 1540 points
Warmaster Armies
----------------------------------------------------------------
 120 -  2 Spearmen
 440 -  4 Silver Helms
 190 -  2 Chariots
 140 -  2 Giant Eagles
 130 -  2 Elven Bolt Thrower
 180 -  1 General
 160 -  2 Hero
 180 -  2 Wizard

EDIT: Viz. Chariots.  They are awful to assemble and yes, they do not line up at all.  Goblin Wolf Chariots are even worse. =-P

Some people seem able to have a hundred models on their table at the same time, and diligently batch paint the whole lot.

Seeking to imitate that productivity, I have attempted to do the same with my Warmaster, but have met with limited success.

10mm painting is so fiddly that without the "hit" of seeing a unit finished, you feel like everything you're doing is stretching out forever when you try to paint multiple units.  At least, that's my feeling of it right now.

In any case, here are 3 finished Chaos Marauder Horsemen units, which I believe have been sat on or near my table for a good two years. :-X

yep I know that sensation. But, I had to say that mauraduers and marauders horsemen are the more time consuming units I had ever paint. The sculpts are so great but full of details and difficult to paint.

Good work with the horsemen!

Great results! Like the freehand on the banners. I get what you are talking about ;D It is really soulcrushing work painting units in bulk. Sometimes you get mini's that just work (my gobbos was a joy) but when I painted the orcs, trolls and ogres I hit periods of time when I just couldnt get myself to paint anything. Just felt like nothing happened anyways so Bleh!

I am not sure painting bulk always help with getting quicker results, but I believe it helps with keeping the results consistent. I am not even sure the results are better than if you painted unit by unit. When painting bulk I usually get tired close to the endline and that's when I get a bit sloppy or lazy...

I have been thinking about trying to paint unit by unit and keep track of every step I take so I can replicate and keep it all consistent that way instead... Bu dunno... It kinda works the way I have it now - even though it can get very very boooooring!

But anyways - very nice results and I like the choice of colours :)

Thanks for your kind words, guys.

I use Dwarf Bronze (old GW range) for the coppery armour, but it's not going to last forever.  I have to decide whether to try the new high pigment GW copper / bronze, Hashut Copper, or try the Game Colour Vallejo option eventually.

I used to use a diluted Hawk Turquoise as a "verdigris" wash, but I got lazy and have the new GW "Nihilakh Oxide" which is probably a bit too bright but not bad.

After finishing the horsemen I completely collapsed and felt swamped with other stuff, uninspired.  I cleared my desk and told myself to do a single test strip as a template, same as I did with the horsemen.

This is the result.

Looking really good. I have more or less a rule: to not paint the same unit (figures) one after the other... I remember I paint mostley the goblins of Bofa at once... and I got crazy... I take ages until I took the brushes again, so I decide to paint several armies at once and jump form unit to unit. It works for me...

Relax, if necessary paint a little bit other scale or period.

Anyway... The test strip of marauders in blue look awesom

Very nice looking marauders! I don't think the verdigris looks bad at all, anything too dark would make it a bit hard to notice on the table. At this scale figures need a bit of help to stand out.

I totally understand the uniform fatigue syndrome, occasionally I paint 6mm Napoleonics for pocket money and the novelty wears pretty thin pretty quick!

Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on July 31, 2016, 10:06:11 PM
Thank you!

When I add some more to it, it would be 2 chaos hound units and another hero and wizard to round it out to 3000 points.

For now, I have achieved the objective of a pool of units to make a variety of 2000 point armies from and so I move on to getting another army painted up in a similar fashion.

I've done a couple of test strips for my next High Elf units; Archers and Reavers.  The idea is to polish off at least one archer unit to allow me a legal 1000 point army, then gird my lions for more spearmen etc. to make a 2000 point army viable.

It's taken years but then I will be able to put on the show of two proper, fully painted armies clashing over some pretty nice terrain.

And after that the other 7 armies...

High Elf Reavers!

Thanks, as always, for the kind words!

I once again thought that I could set up a "factory line" to paint 3 units of these at the same time, and once again got sick of seeing them.

I don't know how people do that; line up dozens of stands or models, no matter the scale, and work on them in batches.  I just feel like I'm not achieving anything.  I need the "hit" of seeing some finished that I can show off or I lose all interest.

So I have finished my first batch of High Elf Reaver cavalry and I am pretty proud of them.  Ideally I want to get the other two finished sharpish and then move onto Spearmen so I have a legal 2000 point army.

I agree. As soon as I get past priming and possibly overbrushing metal if I'm in that kind of mood, I can't work on more than two units at a time.

Loving the pale horses, an excellent contrast to the bright blue.

Very nice indeed, particularly impressed with the wood effect you've managed on the bows! Great looking unit.

I've almost managed to paint three individually mounted Goblins in probably longer than it has taken you to paint a whole unit! My productivity level sucks.
Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on September 21, 2016, 09:15:29 PM
I challenged myself to paint a unit a week, this year.  Right now I'm on 29-ish when I should be on 35...

However, simply by having that as an ideal - I don't feel like I've failed, I feel like I've succeeded in having a painting rate at least 5 times faster than any previous year.

My most successful periods are when I clean my desk of absolutely every other unit / project, only allowing the one thing means I don't feel despondent about "what comes after".

Thanks guys!

Yes, all the gems on my High Elves are painted very roughly to have that 3 stage effect!  Every single spearman in the infantry units has two on his spear, one on either side.  The Silver Helms have several on their helmets and on the base of their lances, too.

Once again I envy your productivity and the quality you consistently achieve.

Well done!

Thanks for the encouragement guys!

^ I tried to base my Dark Elves on something a bit different - super pale, unearthly skin - like vampires, and weird gold.  For the armour I used the new Retributor Gold from GW, washed it with the new Coelia Greenshade - then highlighted with Chainmail.  For the flesh it's Rakarth Flesh then after the wash Vallejo Heavy Warmgrey.

I wanted them to look - lovecraftian, nasty, like they marched out of the sea to attack their warmer cousins.

Anyhow - polished off these two last night at 2am when I couldn't sleep.  My two crossbowmen units.  I have some Corsair models that I might paint up in future to proxy crossbows but right now I'm just trying to scrape 2000 points and say that I've finished another army. =-P

I am planning on using purple as the uniting theme with the Vampire Counts I have...

I like the idea of the turquoise color, but i must say this last unit lacks colours. Everything is greyish, base, horses and figs. Maybe horses with a more black colour could add contrast ? They seem dusty just like that.

Hi Stormwind. Glad to see such a good first try. Personally, I came from the other way around. I have painted several Epic armies and just recently tried out 10mm. I still think 10 mm is huge sometimes.

You could have chosen easier armies, though. Force weapons and heraldry in 6mm... I wish I knew better. I have two Grey Knight Thunderhawks in progress  ::)

Thank you!

I don't think I will really be doing true heraldry, ha ha!  I did try a quartered shoulder pad but you can barely see it.  I think a simple white / red alternation will be what I focus on, even for the vehicles.

Oh, did someone say Thunderhawks? :-X

Finished the General for my Dark Elf army!  This is the Manticore model but I trimmed the base and put it on a proper round 40mm Renedra plastic base - something that I have done with all my Generals and large mounts.  I chopped up a spare High Elf archer from a chariot and a High Elf hero from the command blister to add some casualties...

@Marell

The scenery is form the Eldar 40k range unfortunately, which means you must buy it from "bits" websites.  The one by the Cold One rider is from the Dire Avengers set:

http://www.bitzbox.co.uk/product_info.php/eldar-dire-avengers-statue-p-177

The one one with the banner bearer is from the Wraithlord / Dreadnought set:

http://www.bitzbox.co.uk/product_info.php/eldar-wraithlord-weystone-terrain-p-446

---

The figure is a High Elf, yes, about to be sacrificed!  He is the helmetless loader from the High Elf Repeater Bolt Thrower crew!

And these are the GW 40k sources for the cauldrons - but buying them is harder because they are in demand - I think I bought both from eBay sellers rather than "bits" sites.

I hope that helps!

Haven't got a great photo of these, might try again at some point, but just wanted to show these off.

It's been boiling hot in the UK, so hot that my "wet palette" is drying out! But I sat down and burned through this one unit that had been giving me trouble.  Now I can say that I've finished my Dark Elf army!

Ha ha, thanks!

I decided to do all the rhinos as Grey Hunter markings - all the razorbacks as Wolf Guard just so they stood out on the battlefield...

Plan is for all heavy support - Whirlwinds, Hunters, Predators etc. to be Long Fang colours.

Speaking of which, a proper photo of the Whirlwinds, as yeah, that other photo is a bit rubbish.

Nice painting ! Love the snow too.

Shadowing with complementary colour is ambitious. I think it may be better to go that way by melting paint rather than using it as wash in the deep parts of the relieves (don't know if i make myself understandable).

But well, still, they are really nice :)

I think I know what you mean - I was attempting to copy a much more impressive Space Wolves army I'd seen online.  I'm not sure I have the skillset to do it properly but I felt it was a successful experiment.

The snow is the best GW technical, 'Valhallan Blizzard'.  It's even better than using the Woodland Scenics snow, which had been what I put on my Dark Elves bases.

I thought I would have had this done a couple of weeks ago, blimey.

A couple of space wolf drop pods.  They're the original GW ones, but mounted on 40mm Renedra bases as I thought they would get chipped more easily through handling if they were plain metal.

Thanks!

The GW 'Valhallan Blizzard' is so easy to use it feels like cheating.  With a lot of the GW 'technical' paint pots I have been very skeptical, but this one is a life saver. Wish I'd had it for doing my Dark Elves in Warmaster!

Polished off two formations of Long Fangs, tried to make them 'pop' visually so at a glance they don't get confused with Grey Hunters.

Yes, this is the new range of 'Technical' pots including the blood, Nurgle, 'verdigris', rust and grime effects.

Title: Re: [WM] Stormwind Rails Against the Lead Mountain
Post by: Stormwind on November 08, 2019, 06:37:22 PM
The snow is hard to describe.  I use a small (knackered) paint brush to dip it out and put it on and wet the brush to try and tamp down the snow and make it settle into the pumice grit base rather than float on top.

I experimented with using 'Ardcoat to try and make the snow look more like slush but it didn't work.  I'm sure the right varnish or medium might succeed in that, though.

Righto, finally polished off ten stands of Grey Hunters, with a Wolf Guard leader and a Wolf Priest to boot!

OK so this is not quite Specialist Games but I have been painting some LOTR, a good system that I had dismissed for the longest time.

These are some 3rd party models from Unreleased Miniatures who have an interesting mix of proxies for GW profiles that either are out of print or never got an official GW model option.
